Hey everyone. I haven't modeled anything at all for nearly 8 months now, so today I decided that I'd go ahead and model a great white shark. I plan on rigging it, and do a small animation test.
If anyone's got any tips at all on how to rigg this bad boy up, that would be awsome!

I have a suggestion for the model.

LOL Jay!! Ha ha! I've seen a film where this submarine was training sharks, and instead of shooting torpedoes out of the sub, they actually shot the sharks, and the sharks did all sorts of damage to the other sub, and killed all the crew - man it was a bad film.

Sean - That would be awsome man! Thanks a lot! And thanks also for the link. Rich showed me how to plug a Noise map into the light, and use some fog to make those nice beams. This is exactly the kinda vibe I'm going for;
Does anyone know how to achieve that nice underwater darkness like that? Rich said for me to use the Environment Fog, but I'm too sure how to use it properly.
Thanks for the help here folks, it's much appreciated.

A Zpass, used properly in your composition program could do the trick actualy... white, visible, black , harder to see... if you know what i mean.

Hey everyone, after playing about all day, I've managed to come up with this;
What do you folks think so far? Anything that needs changing?

Nice! You could move a flat plane with the shape of a boat inbetween the light and the shark. Give the impression that there are people/lunch trolling above the fish.

Nice tests! I like the first one the most, but tone down the light rays a bit.
The other two don't feel like the ball is actually in the water to me.

yeah, i like the first one too! too many lightrays though, and maybe they're too small.
or maybe thats just my opinion.
looks great though!!!

lets see it in motion!

Here's a very very quick test I did, only 48 frames, and both the volume fog and caustics don't really go together in sync right now, but I hope you'll get the basic idea;

Good start Iest. Once you get the caustics and fog working together it will look a lot better like you said, and it would be nice to see some little random particles floating around in the water. Rarely is the ocean ever that crystal clear. Just a suggestion.

Hey everyone. Yeah Jay I totally agree, it would be really awesome to have a few particles floating around in there, I'll try my best to add them later on.
Yeah Rich I've got two different lights in there right now, one directional lights with the caustics, and a spot/cone light for the fog and volume light. I'm also using the Environment Fog option in the render settings to add that bit of depth in there as well. I'll try my best and get everything to be in sync together later on tonight.
Here's a quick environment test I've just done, apart from some floating particles, is there anything you guys recommend for this?
Thanks for all the help guys, it's much appreciated!

particles would greatly add to it. watch finding nemo!

I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a great white near the ocean floor.
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
That's a very good point Clay, but he's going to be dropping an object out of his mouth and it falls onto the ocean floor you see.

cant the "object" float around? it could look nice...
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Yeah maybe that would be nicer Rich - I'll have a go at that as well.

Hey everyone - a little render update;
Is there anything anyone would change on this so far? I think I need to have the end of the shark slightly out of focus me thinks?
I've got a friend for animation Mentor to rigg up the shark - which is totally awesome, he's managed to create an auto swim kinda function, so it's insanely cool!
Stay tuned for a little animation test soon.

Maybe have the shark drop the object from his mouth, switch to a different camera down on the ocean floor that shows the object falling towards it in silo, and then switch to another camera ( when the time is right ), where the camera is ON the ocean floor, and the object touches down, sending up a small sand cloud.
Peter
p.s. Looking really good.

Is he going to drop a laser from his mouth?
jkjk
Looking nice man, though I'm no expert in the external lookings of a Great White, it seems the contrast between the white and gray is a little extreme.
-
Hey Iest, the shark is coming along really great! I agree with you that by having the water a bit murky in the distance, with some DOF and particles it will add to the menace.
A couple of things that don't look quite right to me - around his (or her!) eye there's quite a sharp raised area. Sticking with the eyes, sharks tend to have rather . If you didn't have the black outline to the eyes, and made the eyeball black then he might look even more evil.
Finally, and I might be completely wrong here (usually am!), are you using depth-map shadows? There are what look like self-shadowing artifacts just above the mouth. If so, play around with the dmap bias setting to see if they go away, or use ray traced shadows. I know depth-map shadows cast from a parallel light can be problematic.
