Fight animation!

04 Jan 2008Hey guys been working on a new action animation 2 guys on 1. I'm using a fight from the born identity as my reference.
Its not done as you can tell but its coming along.

The only move I didn't get was when the left guy (after being elbowed in the throat) slowly raises his right arm up in a motion parrallel to the floor, only to have the main fighting dude then grab it and throw him down with it....that seemed a little too calculated to me and not so natural. The rest is looking great! Can't wait to see it with finger/facial animation! -
04 Jan 2008Hey thanks man glad you like it so far. what the guy on the left is doing (tho you cant see it) is grabbing his beating stick from his side and in the motion to swing it at the other guy. Knowing that even I see the lack of natural motion that it creates and I've started to play around with it, but once I add in the stick actually in his hand i think it will make more sense and seem more fluid.

08 Jan 2008When he throws the left guy he should lift him on his hip/lower back, then use his arm and hip in unison to propel the attacker upwards then throw.
For a good reference check out this judo throw, the move is called O Goshi (major hip throw).

08 Jan 2008Sweet ref mr. outlaw Joe! the ref I'm using is a bit more of a choke slam type thing I might try animating that move anyway for fun hehe.
here is an update guys pushed some poses to make the motion a bit more fluid and add some weight, also I animated the faces and hands. still needs a few final passes but for the most part its done. Just want to see if there are any crits on stuff i may be missing.

looking much much better now! i really enjoyed watching it...
i think there is two more thing you can do before you're done...
1)when he lands around frame 105, his left foot does somthing weird, seems like it's boucing on the ground. Around frame 117, it's position is fine, so maybe try making it almost land where is is on frame 117, when he lands from his "jump"
2)the pose around frame 170 is not held for even a frame, although it's an important part of the clip, he just wiped the two bad guy's asses! so make him hold the pose for much more time, maybe have him look at the two guys on the ground Then make him go to his final "hero" pose... it will make it much stronger.

I think the action part works quite well so far, I think A bit more Tangents to the animation maybe make
the pacing a wee bit more dramatic can help some.
What I don't like so far is the transition from him holding his arms up to the fighting Its just
not believable as the rest is.. I think its a very tricky part but you'll nail it ..
Maybe even ask a friend and you two can shoot some reference of the change of state of mind from
one idea to another.. this might help alot..
Anyways.. cant wait to see an update -
29 Jan 2008Hey guys here is a new update on the fight. fixed up a bunch of it. Not quite done but I'm working hard on the sword fighting challenge so for now this is where the fight is.

There are a few areas where the motion is a little robotic....and I mean just a teeeeeeny bit....without a frame counter it's hard to describe where, but since you said it's not quite done I'm assuming you've already caught those times. It's just a matter of tweaking the overlap a bit in some areas.
Other than that...you've done a great job...I love the subtlety of the guy on the right crawling away a bit after he's down
