Modeling the Titanic for a Lighting and Rendering class. Just started recently, so i'm working on getting the shape of the hull made out.

Hey that looks really nice! Hulls are very tricky to get right, and you've pretty much nailed it. The only minor crit I have is that the bow looks a bit sharp, it would look lovely with a slight radius. Though that may just be the camera angle.
I'm looking forward to seeing the finished work! Ships are my passion, I'm working on a Russian Sovremenny class destroyer myself actually. Keep us posted

minor update
http://www.mechag.com/vrg/Titanicwip.jpghttp://www.mechag.com/vrg/Titanicwip2.jpgYea the front of the bow is only a single edge right now, i'll try rounding it out a little bit. And yea the hull was a royal pain to make haha.

Did you make it in Nurbs or poly's? I can't quite tell from the pics. Making accurate and efficient nurbs hulls is an artform unto itself.

I made the basic shape out of nurbs and then converted it to polygons and then fine tuned from there.
Added more detail to the stern of the ship. Will probably start modeling on top of the deck after making a few adjustments and adding a couple of details to the bow.

looks good, what are you modeling with? i learned nurbs last year and it looks like a hul would almost be easier to do in nurbs than in polys, just a consideration

edit: i'm stupid, ignore this post

Started modeling objects on top of the deck and have come to the realization that there is an absurd amount of objects on deck lol. Hoping to have all but the railing on the bow done tonight.

boats have always seemed daunting to me, thats probably why

Thats why I love ships, loads and loads of detail and gribble. I just looove making all those tiny bits. I really need to get a life.

Yea all of the detail is rather fun, though I tend to get carried away hah.
Slightly more updated pics of the bow. Still browsing through google image search and the Titanic movie for detailed pictures of the remaining objects.
Punching in all of those portholes with booleans is going to be a blast...

looking really good so far. if you're able to make everything thats normally on a ship with the amount of detail you've shown so far then this will end up really good

could we see a bit more of a close up? hard to see most of those details from your camera angle.

That looks gorgeous! I really can't wait to see more. I love modelling projects like this, detailing is my favourite part.

Oh wow! You've really gotten right in there and modelled the nitty gritty stuff eh!
Looks amazing so far! James Cameron would be proud!

Hahaha yea I bet James Cameron would be proud. I'm modeling with as much detail as I can get reference for. In some areas I've gone as detailed as making nuts and bolts that hold stuff together and pulleys. Since my internet is working again, I'll post a couple of close up shots tomorrow. May be taking about a week off from modeling though. Need to bust out a crapload of concept sketches and preliminary storyboards for a Senior Project concept presentation :S
