03 Feb 2008Hey guys just working on my lip sync skillz with a real short little clip form butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Lip sync is my biggest weakness so I want to pump it up a bit so any and all crits and comments are more than welcome!

03 Feb 2008Hey mate,
Well the biggest issue I'm noticing right now is that your guy's lips are almost entirely syncronized with your guy's teeth. This makes for very rigid lipsync, and many of the words don't seem like they're being pronounced properly.
A good example would be at "kill him". He should be showing quite a bit of upper and lower teeth at "kill", and then at the end of "him" his lower lip should move up to entirely cover his bottom teeth, and press up against his upper lip, to really sound out the "M".
Follow through with the same principle on the rest of your phenomes and you should be set

mechis 520 posts03 Feb 2008I don't know a whole lot about lip synch, so I can't offer tips on how to improve... but I think the lip synch reads a lot better in the second half than the first. The first half seemed mushy and I couldn't actually tell that the character was saying the words. The second half was synched very well with the main sounds of each word.
Also, I think your main actions are a little too broad. The way you have it now, it looks like he's talking to two people-- one off to the side and one straight ahead. What you might want to do is not have him turn so much in the beginning and keep his movements minimal. Then at the words "kill him" you can have him accent it with the big move forward. This would be good because the words are shocking, as would be the big move contrasted with the minimal movements at the beginning. Dunno... just an idea.

04 Feb 2008hey guys thanks a bunch. Mechis, I was worried if the movement was to much, in my mind what he is doing is frist leaning in close so no one else hears him then when he looks away for "when its done if Im dead" I was thinking "dramatic" look away when he talks about his death. But i think your right i can probably achieve the same effect with a much smaller move.

I made the adjustments you suggested T but im not sure if i too them far enough and I eased up on the body motion a bit. Also I added a tongue to help with some of the shape.

personally I don't use sites like that as a reference, I either use a mirror, or if I don't have a mirror nearby my computer, I'll just speak the dialogue myself and use my hand to feel the shape my mouth is making. -

06 Feb 2008heres another update this one is very minor, I worked on "loser" being the area that had stood out the most.
I am at the point know where I don't really know what needs work, I can tell its not done but my lack of experience with lip sync makes it harder to "see" what needs to be done to fix whats left.

06 Feb 2008I'd start by offsetting your entire audio track -2 frames, start with -2, if it looks too early try -1, but right now it's late almost throughout.
A little trick I learned here is whenever you hit an R except for in a few special cases, you always want to hide the lower teeth and bring the upper lip up to show the top teeth a lot. You've done it there I noticed, but in that guys shapes that you linked he lumps R in with a bunch of others which is bleh.
Start with the jaw up and down and match the sync first, then build off of that. Try the offsetting back two frames thing and post it up maybe? -
06 Feb 2008Hey mate,
Another thing I'm noticing is that for almost every mouth shape, his mouth open really wide/tall. Make sure that only on the accents of the dialogue you have him open his mouth really big. Like, I'd say at "kill him" it's perfect, but at (and/or around) "loser" his mouth is opening far too much (as in, the size of his mouthshape...not the fact that it's opening)....try to tone it down in the areas where no emphasis is being put on the words. -
