This is a project from a couple years ago that I'm going back thru and polishing, trying to make 'er pretty and stuff... (animation project from 3DBuzz). Comments and suggestions along the way are appreciated...
(the color is a bit weird here... trying to fix the color profile...)

Thats nice, I like the cloudyness in the background. Is this for an animation? Tell us about it

.

I toned down the blue in the background quite a bit, had a gamma problem...
The project is a revamp of an animation I did a couple years ago for the 3DBuzz Mastering Maya Fundamentals, viewable at youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OKWOU2qUxII'm basically just polishing it up for demoreel material.

Hey I think that's looking a lot better.
Might be nice to get a little more atmosphere haze around the earth...also, the stars could be a bit smaller imo.

if ya look at alot of pictures of the earth in orbit, ye can hardly see the stars in contrast with the earth's brightness so i'd recommend toning down the background alot. and yeah, needs more atmosphere, but i really like how you can see the lights when it goes to the darkside of the planet.

hey fella's,
thank you for the suggestions, appreciate your guidance...
adjusted the stars for size and contrast, also dropped the saturation a bit on the earth to compensate for atmosphere/haze

very nice progress there! it is looking really nice now, the stars look much better
i bet you could get it to look even better if you would play with the specular of your sea to get somekind of a glossy effect on it (a bit like plastic)
keep working on it, cause you are doing great! making an earth is a rather challenging thing to do!

agreed with Rich, a more glossy finish on the ocean layer would benefit the scene alot in terms of realism.

excellent tips...
here's a bit more shinyness on the water, lil tweak of the atmosphere:
