WAH64-D Longbow Apache WIP

I've got to a stage where I think I can show you how my apache is coming along. I've really tried to stick to the original as much as possible and as accurately as possible. Bear in mind that this is the WAH-64D version (the British model) so it has some bits and pieces that the US version doesn't (though I did throw in the "pineapple" behind the rotors, which isn't on the UK version. But at least I have the option.) I did a ton of research on this, and it really paid off. This really is a big step for me, I'm very happy so far. I've still got to model the cockpit interior, and there are a few missing peices that mental ray didn't want to render for some reason, but they aren't noticeable really. Thank you all so much for your invaluable help with this so far, I couldn't have done it without you guys

29 Feb 2008really nice details in the 2nd to last image. do you have any wires? it looks fantastic so far, make sure to make the final render something special

01 Mar 2008wow thats some detail work especially where the rotors meet the motors (i couldnt resist) i mean the 6. pic.
i would like to see some wires too
so cream it up with materials and kill it! -

Will J 215 posts02 Mar 2008Thanks guys, much appreciated. I'm just correcting the niggling problems and building the cockpit today. I'm hoping to start texturing next week. I'm still pretty green with texturing, especially when it comes to making them in photoshop! I really hope it comes out ok, the texture really will make it! I think i'm going to give it an Israeli color scheme, it's unusual with the black nose and radar and the desert camo. I'll post more pics as it progresses.

02 Mar 2008Very nice so far man, texturing this should be fun, most of it could be done with procedurals, but wow, you'll have a great peice here when you're done with everything. Great work.

03 Mar 2008Hey Will - this is a 100% awesome model mate. Staggering work! You'll have to do a kick-ass animation along the lines of the game Gunship on the C64 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HadNMYvCWqE (First time I saw that as a young lad I was slack-jawed in amazement, as it was pretty much state of the art. How times have changed!).

Will J 215 posts18 Mar 2008Yay texturing is finished! I may add some dirst etc here and there, but as an off the factory floor model, I'm very proud. I learned a heck of a lot doing this, and I can now say I'm pretty comfortable with the texturing process. Here it is:
EDIT: Bugger! I just noticed a few bits that haven't been smoothed, easy to fix!

Claymation 600 posts18 Mar 2008Hey that's pretty nice! I don't like the flat black shaded parts though, especially the propellers and all that on top, you really lose all of the detail. And definitely some dirt/camo coloring would go a long ways as well.

18 Mar 2008Hey buddy-O-pal looking freaking sweet. the detail in the model is suburb! I do agree with clay however i think if you worked some of those textures just a bit it will up it x10 because all that amazing detail is lost in the solid colors. something else that always helps when it comes to textures is the lack of perfection aka scratches all that, doesn't have to be anything major but the little imperfections go a long way.
But I'm being picky you really have a nice bit of work there!

Will J 215 posts18 Mar 2008Thanks guys, you're right bout the imperfections, I was always going to dd them I was just keen to get some renders up haha . I'm working on them at the moment, adding some color to the panel linese and some grime around the rivets etc so you can see them better. I don't really know what to do about the black areas though, they are matt black on the real chopper, so don't know how to address tha issue.
Thanks for all the feedback, I'm really trying to blow my tutors away with this one (eight hellfire missiles should about do it

19 Mar 2008hey will good to hear you were already working those textures a bit! about the black parts, I've always had trouble making that look good as well, but i think if you look at thing around you that are that same sort of color like a keyboard, monitor, or maybe a car tire you realize they are more of a grayish black than just solid black and even they have the "dirtyness" like everything else. So maybe try lightening up the color a bit and you can add some rough edges to the texture to help show the shape... any of that make sense some times I ramble nonsense.
anyway cant wait to see more!!! -
19 Mar 2008a more realistic lighting setup could help your render tests, and would help to be able to see more of the details.
