PEVFX Fire - hype

03 Aug 2006ok, i'm in. i don't have any plug-ins for fire (afterburn), but i have ideas and can use DTE when I get really stuck!
I think I might shoot some video of my hand and show me lighting it on fire, then palming a piece of paper. that sounds easy and fun. -

ok, just some object tracking. the particles aren't really the direction i'm going, i just didn't want this first post to be plain and boring.
i'll be using particle for smoke, but for flame, i'm going with geometry. -

I think it would be cool if the fire starts at the bottom and works its way up.
In this situation I wouldnt be thinking there'd be much smoke though. -

04 Aug 2006cam, not too much smoke, but i tiny little bit, like, a puff when it starts, then just a little really light, hazy smoke.
yeah, i'm looking forward to seeing the flames, too...
i have an idea for geometry flames. i tried it once before in a quicky fireplace i made, and it came out ok, but not perfect. i'm looking at this challenge as (hopefully) a chance to improve on what i had done before. maybe near the end i'll post the fireplace, too. if i run out of time to work on this (i'm working on another short movie), then i'll probably use the fireplace as my entry. but i really don't wanna do that. -

glow needs work, shader needs some work, but i'd say its 75% there.
ignore the arm in the background.
(still using yourfilelink - had some ftp problems. nothing a little reformat won't fix!) -

I also used a flex modifier on my own. I think it would help a lot.

07 Aug 2006an update.
no smoke yet. i know Cam thinks there shouldn't be smoke (perhaps he knows this from a quiet evening at home lighting himself on fire?), but i'd like to see a little after the fire goes out, and maybe from the paper.
still stuff to do on it. having fun!

The fire at the moment looks just like your hand is glowing, is there a way to have some detail in it? -

The only bit i think you could improve on is when it goes out, it kinda fades out, try and make it so that everytime you whack your hand, it goes out a bit at a time, and when you finally shake your hand, then it goes out?

08 Aug 2006Nice stuff man! my only crits so far is that the *floaties* don't have enough turbulence on them, they feel like they arent part of the fire, but more like some other type of effect. I think having them fade out quickly and move around a bit more might help sell it a bit. Overall, Great stuff so far.

21 Aug 2006ugh... i'm just too dang busy working on another short movie to be able to tweak this so it doesn't look like digital gibberish. i actually have a deadline for this short, so i'm having to kill myself to finish it.
so i guess i just have to go with the last version i have on here (of my hand burning.)
i thought i wasn't gonna be able to enter the air one, but i think one of the effects in my short may count as "air", so i'm gonna enter it. -

21 Nov 2006ok, now it's finally getting somewhere useful. of course, could still use more tweaking, which i'll be sure to do as soon as I think of something.
maybe some sparks and ashes falling off when I bang my hand on the stool. maybe more detailed smoke, more tendril type stuff.
anyway, gimme some feedback! and thanx for all thus far!

okay, i might stop on this. This looks a teeny bit better, darker smoke and some extra sparks, but I'm really happy i was finally able to make cool fire with no plugins.
if anyone has any tips or comments, please say so! -

mechis 520 posts24 Nov 2006The only crit I have is that the fire starts out over your entire arm, instead of starting where the lighter is and growing outward.
Besides that..... this looks HOT! Really nice work!!!
