I'm in too. started modelling some of my idea last night. i'm wokring 2 jobs right now, so i may have to bail, but i really wanna get something in! I have a super cool idea!

ok, gang. I'm scrapping my scene. Tyson just totally raised the bar WAYYYYY over our heads, so I'm getting a bigger ladder!
my scene was going to be a skeleton arm bursting out of the ground and clawing at the earth, but that's officialy garbage now.
I'm going to do my damndest to challenge tyson. *cue "Rocky" music here*
we have 9 days. today I have to dedicate much of my time to my short movie, but after that, i am on this friggin' challenge like... well, like awesome on tyson!
C'mon, guys & gals, let's not let T stroll off with another trophy! I think making such kickass animations in a single day is T's way of trying to kick us into high gear. I'm stepping it up a bit for this one. no half-finished, "i wish I coulda done blah blah blah" from me on this one! i'm delivering.
9 days, mister. 9 days. make them count, cuz after that...
(anyone got my back?)
they don't call this a "challenge" for nothing!

ok, nothing really to show yet, unless you haven't seen me trying to work things out over in the max thread.
http://www.simplycg.net/viewtopic.php?t=1493
but i should mention that i downloaded a few BG pics from the net that i'll be incorporating my 3d effects into. if i can remember where i got them, i'll post the link. but i'll be taking no credit for the breathtaking BG images in my entry.

Well I won't be entering myself Hype... but I plan to kidnap Tyson and tie him to a wild rampaging elephant. I hope this'll help you out bud. Good luck!
-
hype 2,964 posts
if the elephant is stampeding through a barren african savanah and you videotape it, i think you can enter that.
-
hype 2,964 posts
ok, i have animation, but nothing worth watching yet, so here's a couple WIP screenshots.
-
hype 2,964 posts
oh - and i should mention that i snagged all my BG pics from Google, and the car model is from a 3DWorld magazine cd.

ok, here's a few more in-progress screenshots. i don't have any exciting animation yet - well, not to a stage i wanna show anyway.
i have exactly 23 hours from the moment i am posting these. tomorrow i'm coming home from at 9pm and finishing. it'll be up by midnight. i doubt i'll have all the details in it, but it should be cool anyway.
there's more than enough info here to see what i'm doing.

well, these, plus the animation/particle tests tyson was helping me with in the Max thread, should be enough to give it all away.
oh, and if i haven't mentioned it anywhere yet, i LOVE the name CornJam. I'm thinking about naming my first boy that. it's really growing on me. thanks for that, Cam!

Great stuff man! really looking forward seeing this one!
Quick question - how do you go about matching the geometry like that? what i normaly do is rotate the camera so that the groundplane matches the gorundplane in the photo and start to build away on the geo - but, whenever i do this everything starts going waaay wrong, and almost 100% of the time my geo ends up going through the image plane, or it ends up totally being the wrong scale. Is the gemoetry in your scene roughly real-life size?
Good one, looking forward seeing more!

That's actually not bad advice there Hype... If I'm animating a shot I'll always animate to that one 'shot' camera only - and look through that cam when I'm making sure it looks good and the arcs are ok etc. Often to make it look nice in the shotCam some 'cheating' must be done.
but... it's often at that point the director says "Ooh can we move the camera over here a touch"... doh!

whew... 20 minutes to go...
i re-thought my whole particle thing on the way home and re-did tonight. it's rendering now, probably not gonna be done in 20 minutes, but certainly less than an hour (i hope!).
i was having some issues when my particles would fly towards their target, they kind of overshot and had to snap back into place. with motion blur turned on, it was REALLY making a mess. i was going to put in a deflector where i didn't want them to go past, and simply delete them, but then i thought of another idea entirely. I am still using the shape mark thing, though. what an amazing operator, a shape mark! also found a nice tidbit reading Pete's website, a complex little thing involving a Volume Select and it's inverted selection, being used to reveal actual geometry, i think by converting a particle system with the mesher compound object. a bit too much for me tonight.
i'm liking what i have, though! i think this might be my proudest entry yet into a simplyCG challenge. see that river in the one shot of my WIP pics? i'd REALLY like to have some splashes going on in there, but we'll see if time permits.
anyway, just killing time waiting for a test render...
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Great to hear you're finishing it up hype! Still can't wait to see this!!!
As for your particles overshooting and then snapping back into place, what exactly do you mean? If you're using a "find target" operator you can tell the particles to ease into their target to avoid snappy motion like that.
-
hype 2,964 posts
i gotta dig out some sound fx while its rendering...
here's another WIP pic i grabbed before i clicked render.
just shows more accurate canyon geometry, for a matte/shadow holdout. i'm still using my crappier earlier geometry for particle collisions, though, so i'm not up all night waiting for it to render. (UDeflector w/ meshsmooth + particle Collision = hours & hours & hours...)
i'm gonna be useless tomorrow at work!!
the motion blur problem is there in that last test i posted in the Max forum, in the thread where you helped me with the shape mark. if you watch the top of the torus, you can see all these blurry lines darting around the top of it as the particles are flying up there. i couldn't seem to fully grasp that find target operator. by the name, it sounds like you'd drop it on, pick a "from" object, then either position the target gizmo or pick a "to" object, and it would just slide linearly between the two. but it doesn't work that way. it's default settings have it swooping around all over the place before it gets anywhere near the target. i really had to mess with it to get it to fly straight and quickly to the target geometry. so, my new technique doesn't use Find Target.
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Hmm that's very strange bro....do you have an event that gets the particles get channelled to once they test positive in the find target operator? If you don't they'll just seek out the next random point on their target mesh instead of stopping.
-
hype 2,964 posts
the shape mark event was the next thing they went to. so that the second they hit the target (the torus), they turned into marks. the only things i could think of that it might have been were either strange motion blur artifacts (which i usually only get using image MB, not object. i was using object MB here), or maybe some of the particles were swooping inside of the torus to connect with those faces on the inside "donut hole" part, and it was happening so fast all that showed up was goofy motion blur. beats me. when my good computer is done rendering, i can take a screenshot of the flow if you really wanna check it out, or even upload my Max file. it was strange, but i'm a bit accustomed to finding a different way and moving on. (hahaha, that explains alot about why i'll forever be an "intermediate" 3D'er!)
when i applied what i learned in the torus test to my real scene, it was happening much worse, but i think that might've been cuz i just didn't play with the Find Target settings enough. I came up with an alternative before i was forced to work through it.

Ya man a screenshot would be great, and maybe a playblast if your problem
BUT SLEEP COMES FIRST!!! Post that stuff tommorow so you're not totally groggy from staying up late
-
hype 2,964 posts

i totally fell asleep waiting for it to render!!
ah well, here it is. problems, yes, there are many. but i like it. coulda been better. but i think i did much better than where i was headed before Tyson put the pressure on!

BG pictures from Google (someone's vacation), car model from 3DWorld magazine, particle help by Tyson. Mistakes by me.

Hype my man well done i like it alot.
crits: the rock bridge when it is exploding seemed to formated, all the rocks where close to the same size would have looked more natural if it had broke with a few huge parts and maybe some of the bridge would eplode with more or less for than other parts if that makes sense
but all in all i understand time constraints and all that lovely stuff
anyway I loved it much better than mine!

i'm sure you're well aware of it's problems as you said, But on a conceptual level, I love it! I really dig the idea of that effect, and your execution of it is really good too. It would have been cool to see another shot of the bridge being formed from close up though. Cool stuff man.

GREAT stuff man!! Seriously awsome stuff! That first shot of the car going behind the clouds was awsome! And i really digged the close up car shot. Actually, i really liked all of it man. Great stuff!!
Really nice entry. Good job!
Can I ask - what do you guys see whats wrong with this? I cant spot anything?

Hey... Well worth the wait Hype. Very cool effect, would love to see it all slowed down a touch (I think the speed at which some of the boulders drop upsets the 'scale' of it).
Great shots though man! And great idea too! Me likey!... mmm magic cars...
Hey did you animate the bird too?
