So yeah, I did a small speed mattepainting tonight, and threw in some fluid stuff real quick. I know it's not pretty yet, but this is an idea of what I got here. There will be plenty of elements in here before the end of the challenge....

Glad you guys like it so far. I am hoping to finish it on time for the challenge. My video card on my PC melted, (Thank god the fan is in a little copper dish.) and I'm waiting still to get my new ones in the mail. Either today or tomorrow at latest. I am going to stick it whether I make the deadline or not though. Man, I swear, sometimes it seems like the planets are aligned against me. lol.

ok, I had a little time to get some stuff in here, My video cards should be here tomorrow if theyre on time, so I did this on my wimpy machine. takes a while to calculate anything in the viewport, but I had to get something out to show you guys. It's pretty much way off at this point, but progress is progress, even if it's backwards.

Hey zach...cool update! I really like the look of the motion of the waterfall...my only gripe is that the splashing/shoreline particles in the forground seem to pop up and down...maybe that's just my eyesight? They're pretty tiny in the preview...
-
hype 2,964 posts
nice, zach! the waterfall looks really cool! nice revealing camera move, too. my only crit would be that the clouds aren't moving, but perhaps that's something the new graphics card will help with (maybe they're fluids or volumetrics or something processor intensive?)
this is gonna look amazing rendered!
-
zachm 1,230 posts
yes, they are popping, at this point I only have the script set up so that when parts of the water plane collide with a plane directly above it in those areas, they emit particles. I just haven't written the falloff yet. And as far as the clouds go, yeah, you're absolutely right, Once i get some graphics power back, I'll be able to tweak them good and proper. They are actually animated, but I turned off the update for them for preview purposes. I also need to slow down the particles on the waterfall, add mist, add some other stuff happening. I am going all out when my cards arrive.

Sheesh, I feel like i'm holdin up the line. I don't have a final render tonight, but I will tomorrow night. Here is where it stands right now, and the particle stuff is all kind of crappy, but I rushed till thiis point, so that's what I get. Plus I couldn't seem to find my save key once or three times or so.
Your comments and input are welcomed warmly like a warm cup of warm welcome.

Ohh yeah!! Didnt expexct that!! that was awsome man! Hope you manage to render this, would love to see how it looks in all it's rendered glory.
How did you get the particles to emit like that? They look pretty neat!

Woah mate, that looks awesome!!!
!!!
Seriously.
I'm tempted into closing the challenge now and blocking you out so you cant get the rendered scene in... maybe then the rest of us have a chance against that.

but I wont... you've got till cam lunch time 2moro
put ur speedy render pants on.

Even though my final has been submitted, I wanted to take and rework this shot from the ground up, getting feedback from you guys and making it purty. So here's a new update of the tentacle animation. Please dig on in and tell me what you love and hate!
Oh, and here's a shading test on the tentacle. Subject to change, as I'm not finished with the color map yet.

Much better movement! Few things that come to mind, firstly... Im not a fan of the whole grabbing technique unless you can go all in and create a plane and have it actually wrap around it and go nuts if not, I'd suggest just smashing the plane so it catches on fire and crashes itself. Also, i'd say to make sure the suckers are on the side that it uses to grab the plane and if you're going with the same technique, from the actual flow of the grab, it doesnt look like it brings the plane back, its like a quick snatch and then it falls asleep for a second, and then brings it back into the water, it just seems a bit broken up the whole grabbing and thieving movement looking ausom!!!
-
Goul 246 posts
yeah...that's a lot better, we can feel the weight of this giant tentacle here
-
hype 2,964 posts
i like the movement overall better, but i think the snap grabbing motion has lost some of the punch. i like the overall slowness of it, it just feels like if i were flying a plane there, i might have enough time to swerve out of the way. but, overall, feels better. there's also some weird kinks in it as it curls at the end. maybe these are intentional, but they look odd to me.
glad to see your gonna keep going on it! oh, the texture rocks!
-
zachm 1,230 posts
Thanks for the comments guys! I have tweaked it out a bit, put some snap back in the punch, and as far as those kinks go, they get smoothed out at rendertime. I feel like I have it almost there, and at the same time, I feel like restarting because the tentacle isnt long enough, and can't wrap around the plane once or twice like I would like it to. Plus, I learned a couple things about setting up this kind of rig that I might do differently to make it look better. I want to finish it, but I think it might work better if I remade the tentacle and changed the camera to a more dynamic angle. Tell me what you gujys think

ok, So I have decided to rehash this whole thing and go for something a bit more dynamic. This animation has a few things to iron out, but I just wanted to drop it on you guys and get some feedback. So go ahead and tell me what you think of the new and improved one so far.
