Hey guys, I'm in!
Dont know if you guys remember, but it's been exactly a year now to the day since i had that unfortunate accident when i got a metal pole through my leg and I did that 'Nuclear' Back to the Future parody. Wow time flies!
Looking forward doing this one!

Ha ha. Yeah good times!
Yeah i basically fell whilst carrying a washing machine, and landed on a hollow metal pole, and the the weight of the washing machine landed on me and forced the pole to go right through me leg - kinda like an 'apple corer' - Im still suffering from it now, leg gives way etc while walking - but it's on the mend!

Ha ha - yeah, thanks for the concern guys, it is a lot batter these days. Been cycling to work pretty much everyday (10 miles) to get the leg back up to strength, but the nerve takes a bit longer to heal - thus causing the leg giving way.
I was helping my girlfeinds brother to carry the machine, and I tripped up on some loose carpet, and went flying. The docs took pictures and everyhting, with the metal pole lodged right in there, I really wish i can get hold of a copy!
Back to work, this is my idea, I've created a reference for the character, and i might change him to Santa Clause later on;
Does anyone have any heads up as to how I could go about creating a ribbon/bow?

Ok - this is a quick linear playblast of what I've got so far;

Been working on this through tonight (had a quick breack to put the christams decorations up - i cant for the life of me find the christmas tree plastic legs, so we've no christmas tree at the moment!) It would be great to get any feedback.
What I'm thinking is that the way the box goes up looks a little strange - would a box go up like that? That is in a straight line after it's passed the chimney (bear in mind that the chimney helps support the box going up) - what do u guys think?

If there was no friction at all it would, but chimneys are generally made of brick which would in turn make the box tilt as he pushed it up. To have it go straight up he would need to be quite a bit more underneath it. You could avoid needing to make it tilt by having him struggle a little more maybe. Just some suggestions.

What I'd be suggesting, is to have the top of the gift in his chest as he does it, and as he pushes it up, it should rotate over the top of the chimney, but from the size of that box i'm thinking it should be massively heavy, so he should be struggling, knees quivvering, ups ups ups, down, ups, down down ups, ups ups ups, down, ups ups, down, ups ups, phew...
movement of the box I think should look like: _\|

Ok - I've gone back to this and re-vamped it all, this is what I've got so far;
I've yet to do a pass on the arm/hands - any C&C would be great.
Cheers

Lookin great! The weight is very believable. The only thing is that the center of gravity doesn't look like it's in the true center. In the way you've got it, the box overlaps the chimney less than half of it's width, but it rests there without any need for support. Just, the way the box rests at the end looks precariously off-balance...
But in any case, great work so far! Really really cool.

Hey Sean - excellent! Exactly what i wanted - i think i'll go with the way you guys do it over there at work and create a Background Layer, and a foreground layer, and do a bit of roto if i want. Thanks for that tip!
In Maya we've got a Shader called 'Use Background' and it does pretty much the same as you Maxer's call Matte/Shadow shader - but, if we Mayaer's render out particles, we have to use a seperate Render called 'Maya Hardware Render' and I have no idea how this works with different shader's, I've only used it to render particles, and I'm not shure it works well if at all with geometry.
Thanks again man.

I've played about with the render in Photoshop, and this is what Ive got so far;
I found an image of a suburbia on Google and whacked it in, does it look ok? How else would you guys recommend me doing it?
I tweaked a few things in the anim today, and I'm currently re-rendering the whole thing.

the tree looks very obviously cloned. It wasn't that offensive when it was only 2 of them as far apart as they could be, but now, it looks really glaring and obvious. maybe change them up a bit.
but the BG looks much better!
and maybe try one where the BG snowflakes are sharp and the FG ones ore out of focus. maybe it won't look as good, maybe it'll look better. worth a look.
nice update though!

I've tried it with the snowflakes at the front being blurred and it looks much better in my opinion, here's my Final Entry (I hope);
Right click Save As...
I've played about a bit with the background, and tweaked the animation a bit here and there, I'm much happier with the way the box goes into the chimney now.
