Just a quick update, rendering out the whole animation now, hopefully it'll finished rendering by the deadline!
There's a few things im not happy bout it, but unfortunatley, time isn't on my side this week (got loads of Work to catch up with after my Month off work.)

Hey man, it might be nice to get some light coming off that screen....also, a stronger rim light from the left would also help it....right now the lighting is kinda dull
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hey, yeah i'm really having a spot of trouble with the lighting at the moment.
Is there a cool tutorial you'd recommend about how to set up lights properly for a scene (haven't heard of a rim light before!?) that would be great.
Thanks for the crit - keep 'em coimng.

I've read up a bit about Rim Lighting, and i agree, the results on some of the renders i've seen on the things I've read look really good.
However, these tutorials were written for users making a stil life, could you give me some pointers as to how this works for my animation where the main source of lighting is coming from directly behind Mr. Packageman?
Thanks

God I can see what u mean now Tyson, I've just viewed the image on my work computer, and the lighting looks really dodgy, on my home computer the lighting looked spot on, at home I've got a flat screen and at work it's a proper old TFT - how strange!

hehe
Well when it comes to rim lighting, you just want to give the edges of the model a nice glow....
Also....it's not that the lighting is necessarily "wrong" or anything....it's just very dark right now

This is the best i can come up with i think, (just like to thank Tyson for the extremly helpful help - cheers man!) but, because im away this weekend, im not going to have any chance to play around with the lights anymore. Hopefuly, i'll finish this by Wednesday! Does the light look better?

Ya man it's definitely more improved from the last shot!
Might be nice to see a bit more light on his face....but if you don't have time that's cool

I actually prefer the first over the latter. Makes more sense...this one is too dramatic, but based on the wrong foundation. The light on his face is the most important light in the scene, i mean if your whole room was dark and all you could see was the green light shining on his face, it would have been better than the last attempt in my oppinion.
Now, it somehow seems that the most important thing..or the main attraction of the scene, is going on BEHIND him (light shining on him), and not in front of his eyes.
just my 5cents...

Hi guys, thanks for your replies, yeah i might bump up the light on his face and darken the background a tad, but otherwise, i think with Tyson's wise words i think it look much better now that the whole green look room, but i'll take on board your comments amer, and play around just a little bit more tonight.

Apart from Packageman switching from being a smoothed version to a 'normal' version 1/2 way through the opening shot -D'oh!, im quite happy with it. Trying to get my head around Premiere was also a massive challenge, therefore the audio is'nt in perfect sync with the animation - and a few clippings here and there.
Go easy on me - it's my first time going through the whole sequence of animating and rendering and doing the post wrok etc etc. All in all im quite happy with it.
I was going to give them some clothes and hair - but due to inexperience with Maya Cloth and Hair - it proved a bit difficult, but hopefuly you'll get the jist of it.

P.S. Thanks goes to Tyson, Quinn and Cam for their Jedi Skills and knowledge! Thanks guys

quite entertaining!! i likes!
something wierd going on in the goggle areas though... all in all i think its a good effort, all it needs is tweaking here and there.
Well Done!

iest_rob 1,671 posts
Yeah - the goggles is due to the smoothing i mentioned above.
Thanks man

Hey thanks Cam, well i learned a lot during the process of making this, and was a very good eye opener - my girlfreind (she's the gril on the monitor) is very happy to have me back now - no more late nights for a while, he he. But really looking forward to the next challenge!
Thanks a lot for the help Cam.

Hey man,
Good to finally see it done! I really like the idea behind the sound clip and I think you did a great job parodying it! I also thought it was cool that you chose to edit your animation like a regular video....lots of people display lip-synced anims as one long sequence but cutting it up helps to keep the viewer's interest a bit more
The animation is stiff in areas, and the lipsync is a little too snappy too.....but that's what these challenges are for!...to practice those things
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hey T - thanks for your comments man, yeah, i was trying my best to put in some more secondary motion, but the deadline rolled in waaay to fast. Hopefully i'll be able to perfect things a lot better for the next time. And i agree, there is no better way to practice than by doing this!
Thanks man
