this should be interesting i'd really like to see what maya can do in way of particles and dynamics i know it can simulate liquids and stuff but i've never seen its particles. could you post a few screens with ur wips

?

Hey man - yeah of course, im really looking forward to this, and i'll keep you posted.

Hey all, this is my first attpempt, i need to play around a bit with the colourings, and get a bit of debri floating about, etc, but i quite like the results so far, what do u guys think?
Here's a screengrab:

wow, looks great!
the only thing i would critique at this early stage is that the "container" shape for the particle is a bit to evident.
but you're probably aware of that.
keep going with it!

Hey - thanks for the reply - but just wondering what u mean by the shape being too evident - too much like a 'textbook' tornado?

in the wireframe, theres that blue box that, i believe, represents the area the particles have to stay in. the angles in the box are very evident as the particles move to the ground - they very visibly shift direction.
the particles look great, though!

Hey - no the blue box is a lattice - this deforms my Tornado Cone Geometry - of which the particles emit from - so i can get the cone to shift and stuff. I'll look into this direction shift though. Thanks man

Whoa, I like it alot!
I gotta ask you something. I have no idea how to do what you did... with the smoke for the sprites... how did you do that?? It's something that's been eating at me for a long time... Like, I looked up sprites and know what thei're about, but... yeah..
Looks awesome!

thats sweet, well done... does any max users know how to do somthing similar to that blue box in max? because i have my tornado almost done now but its too straight. i would like to bend it around a bit jist like you did Iest...

in max you could use a FFD modifier. it stands for Free Form Deformer. theres some with preset numbers of control points (i.e. 4x4x4, etc), and theres one that lets you set how many you want. (i think!)
iest_rob - i mean just that the bends in the lattice deformer are too sharp, and when your tornado is touching down, you can clearly see that a hard edged, angled shape is directing where it goes. thats all. not a big deal, especially at this early stage.

i don't think you can use ffd on particules? or can you? basicaly my tornado is done with particules only

Hey jakilo - all that's connected to my sprites is an image of a smoke like cloud. Here's a video tutorial on it at SimplyMaya -
http://www.simplymaya.com/movie_pages/t ... ?tut_id=18
costs like $5 to get 2 points - but worth it if your intrested. Let me know if u need more help.
Sorry Rich - i have no Max experience whatsoever, and have no idea how you'd go about doing this - i only used a lattice on the geometry, and animated that.
This is just a test at the min - the tornado is *hopefully* gonna smash some buildings!!

under compound objects theres a tool called "Mesher". that will allow you to deform particles as a mesh. set it up so it keeps your original particle system as an instance, cuz when you make it a mesher object, its like boolean - it deletes the construction history.
thats actually a really neat tool, that mesher.
read in the help files for the details of using it.
that Boris guy (klug... something - can't remember his last name) described the whole process in one of his books. that was where i first heard about it.

Hello - i really dont think i can play around with this any longer - it's killing me, everyhting i do just looks nasty - so here's what i got so far -
- Divx is required to watch
roto is very rough at the moment - the tornado is suppose to be behind the sheds you see at the bottom - tornado needs to be different colours and blended in with the live action - the slates from the roof of the house it's going through should fly off - and the house should come apart.
The one thing im very happy about is the sounds - my freind Gafyn Lloyd made the Sound FX, and i think it kicks ass! Cheers Lloyd!
The monitor screen, and window frame is CG - and the view is a matte painting i did for this, as the view for the room was bad for this shot. The idea was for me to be playing about on Maya doing a tornado and then looking out the window as studying how a 'real' one looks like.
There are also a few minatures trees we filmed infornt of a bluescreen to get the trees blowing in the wind.
The house floats like that - because it's only a single frame render - not a tracked full render. Wheni get time i will definatly finish it, and post it up.

ugh! i don't have divx on the linux machine at work, and now, from home, i'm not able to connect to the server!
anybody else having trouble with the link? this is the last i have to watch so i can vote!

damn - did you get it hype?

hype 2,964 posts
didn't check here til i got to work, so it'll have to wait til i get home tonight. (i have no idea why divx isn't on these machines).
but, i think we're having an early day today! this place loves partying! there's a block party here today, with all the other companies around us!
so, tonight, i will VOTE!!

Cameron 2,374 posts
maybe you just have the divx coded installed?
Did you try renaming to .avi and testing in a media player?
-
hype 2,964 posts
hey, that worked great!! thanks Cam!!
now i can properly vote! rock on!!
by the way, iest_rob, GREAT idea!! my only 2 critiques, which i'm sure you're well aware of, are the house not sticking where it should, and the rough roto. (i'm a compositor, so those edges make me crazy!

)
well done! probably the most amount of work in the contest, what with all the compositing, shooting live action, sound editing, etc...

Lol - yeah i know, the house isn't a render - it's just a still image, i am gonna finish it soon - but this is all i could do by the deadline - and the roto at the moment is very very rough. Thanks for your comments man, and thanks Cam for helping hype out.
