I've choice the first sound, but i will surely add few little others sounds before and after the main soundfile to complete my animtion
Here's the little bot wich will be my main actor.
Modeling/mapping/setup done, just need few texture and then i will start the animation phase

I've finally finish the backgrounds and, and do some test of lighting/compositing.
Here's the result :
I was searching a quiet and semi-realistic night ambiance, and i'm pretty happy with it.
Now, it's only needs animation (the most difficult part lol)...And a full week end for render
It should be done for for saturday evenig or monday mornig
(ps: to earn modelling time, i've take few free model from 3d-cafe for the background-objects ^^ ) -

My two olds computer are suffering too much lol
Anyway, here is a shot of the animation with all i've reach to render so far...Shadow are missing, occlusion too, i've forgot to remove the first camera shake and the dof suck... huhu
But it works
I don't think i will have time to give the final render for tonight, it will surely come in the next few days, but well, it's a animation challenge so it doesn't matter

really nice work, love the animation and the idea. and you're right, it is an animation challenge, but do please post the final when ever it finishes rendering! i let my final render all night, got up at 6am to check it, and found the motion blur was all messed up! (is there some issue with using image motion blur together with DOF?) so i'm rerendering, hoping it makes it for tonight! -
16 May 2006I've turn off motion blur to increase rendertime
About Dof, i'm using .rpf format to generate it quickly with AfterEffect... The format include the z-depth and allow AftFx to manipulate the DOF.. It's a fast way to make Dof, bu the result isn't as good as real 3D DoF (dofdof )
For motion blur, i'm sorry about your render... unlucky. Try to test few images along the whole animation before launching the final render, that's helpfull sometimes
Making good and fast motion blur is quiet hard in max i think, and especially with MentalRay. If someone have tips to make good and fast motionblur, please let me know

16 May 2006i've got it going ok now, i just switched from image motion blur to object motion blur.
mental ray motion blur i have NEVER had the patience for, but in the rendering options, there's an option to use Faster Scanline motion blur with mental ray. this is MUCH faster, but looks crappy if left at the default settings. there's a pulldown number picker thing right next to it (can't remember what its actually called right now!), and i usually set that at 32, i think. that gets pretty good, fast results out of mental ray.
we sure need a good mental ray tutorials book for Max.
the two things i've found that absolutely annihilate my render times are GI and motion blur used together. i value motion blur more, so the GI usually gets booted.
i wonder if that rpf format can hold data for faking motion blur as well as DOF? here at work to cut back on render times, we use some sort of vector based motion blur thats calculated and added during compositing using motion channel generated during the 3d render. i'm not 100% sure how it works, even though i use it everyday, but something like that would sure help out at home, too. -

I've found another weakness of the .rpf format, it doesn't handle information relative to particles , so for exemple, DOF and effect are not applyable to particles when we use images sequence in .rpf.... Too bad :/
Anyway, here is the final render :

Here is a version, with less DOF , you were right, i think it's already far better
Tyson and jacki> yep, first camera shake is weird and useless, and i'm agree...but well.. i've just forgot to remove it before rendering hehe
For the feets, yeps, you're right again, it's some kind of stabilizers so they don't have to move..
And about the grappel, i've to make it better, now that i've time to remake the renders and finish, i think i will remake this shot, and make it start few frames before.
I don't know if i'll have time to do a full render for monday , but anyway, i will try to get at least the full animation -
