Is this guy the guy from your Avatar?
Other than that it looks like a good start. Im kind of out of it so I don't really have any C&C right now.

He certanly is the guy from my avatar -
http://www.rustboy.com is the creator's website, he's a really awsome character, and the film just looks awsome. It's not out yet, but be shure to check him out!

Great work man! excellent.
Just one note can say is that above his head you may need to smooth it a bit. and about ears, have you made them different from reference?
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hey - thanks guys!
Yeah im using my toy as reference for him - the background image is the actual 3d model that Bryan Tylor made, untextured - the toy is slightly different. Yeah i see what u mean about the head - ill give him a smooth over. Cheers

The box is cool, don't forget to have a little noise in your transparent plastic, will make it look more real, cause they're never equaly flat.
Great work so far.

Looks quite good after that last update.
I just got one question. Re you going to texture it more towards what Brian Taylor did? or the way the toy looks like?
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hi - thanks you guys! Go ahead Quinn! It's an awsome vinyl figure, you should!
Yeah, im gonna add a few bumps etc to the plastic, it'll definatly make it look more real.
I think im going to make it like the toy for now, and if i've got time later on i might make a Bryan Tylor version.
Thanks all!

LOoking fantastic.
Wouldn't have a clue about texturing myself (im all curvy)... I am a procedural guy

I am having the same problem with my guy, its hard to find a good texture.
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Thanks guys, it's been a hectic week, and havent had time to do anything to little old Rusty, but im free now, so im gonna make the textures and everything over the weekend.
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hmmm - im having some serious problems getting the texture right on him, it's very wired. Because of his goldish colour, wherever you view the real toy from the colour changes, goes from being very very light to very dark, does anyone have any ideas as to achieve a good looking texture for this guy- im aiming to get him to look like the model from the link on my 2nd post.
Here's how the model looks;

this isnt going well at all, waaaaaaaa

WOW dude......his metal texture is going GREAT!!
I'd say darken it up a bit though.....right now it's looking very goldy. Also...get some tight reflections on those eyes
-
David Holy 302 posts
Why ? I love this texture! Very good approaching.
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
wey wey wey - that's an actuall photograph!! I'm trying to re-incarnate it to look like this photograph, and wondering how would you guys go about doing this? Is shiny, yet dull, and how on earth would you do Gold?
-
David Holy 302 posts
hahhahahhahahhahahah. You are a good photographer

I thought it was rendered and i suppose tyson did, too.
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
This is the current render, what am i doing wrong guys? To me its looks awful.
-
ALi 608 posts
I have an idea with Vray. use a falloff as reflection map and set type to shadow/light. With color R200 G175 B145 replaced the white. set a low value about 0.1-0.3 as highlight glossiness. and reflection glossiness about .95.
-->> My computer had got many spywares and malwares today. So I finaly had to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. I haven't installed max yet, so I can't make a test if my idea works.

Hey Ali, thanks, but i use Maya.

iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hey - thanks to Quinn and his words of texturing wisdom (thanks man

) I'm now much happier with the results, what does everyone think?
-
Richard 1,943 posts
if you have the model why don't you take pictures and do the texturing in photoshop? your textures are ok at the mo, you just need to ddarken things around the nose and eyes (comparing the render and the picture. nice model by the way. are you ganna work on the neck a bit more ?
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Hey Rich, yeah i've got the model, ad I've tried to model it from the pic, but it just looks horrible. I need to add more detail (as Rich said) around the nose area etc, but im just putting down the base colour at the mo. Yeah, there's a few bits around the neck i need to play around a bit more with.
This is the latest version, and im off to a party now! Woo Hooo!!
Let me know how to improve it please guys,
Ta

I know maya just a bit. So I can't say more.
However some working on the texture and material will make it awesome. Great work Iestern!

Hey all - after playing around with this all day, i just could not get the damn box to look correct, so my original idea has gone through the window. Now I'm pretty tierd, and cannot think for myself, so i went with what Quinn suggested i do - give him a price tag

If it turnes out i still got some time to play around with this in the few days, i'll definatly try and fix his box home, bt for now - here he is;

Hey T, thanks for the feedback mate. Could you suggest a lighting tutorial? How did you learn lighting? I seem to fail miserably at it everytime - ill give your suggestions a try though. Yeah i noticed that this render has'nt got any spec on him compared to my last WIP render, i'll have to play around with that tonight me thinks.
Thanks
