Ooolala....well that looks quite nice then! Great way to fake soft shadows eh! (And as you mentioned, this script would be a great way to make a nice dome lighting scheme)

dude, i ran this last night, and it is awesome! you can just spin the spinners and keep hitting create and it just keeps on dropping lights in there! and its fast! this is amazing work, Franklyn!

Ooo I like youre step value option Frank

...think I might use that in mine as well.
-
hype 2,964 posts
where's the step value? i'm having a bit of trouble deciphering anything not pertaining to a rollout in Franklyn's script.

yeah i dont mind at all . what do you mean by "light lister" :S ? . btw the lights all reference from each other so if you want to change their properties just pick one and change that light

. i've also added a modification roll out where you can control the intensity and hit "update" to change the intensity of the lights . you can also delete all the lights the script has made at the click of a button.
oh and btw one more post and u'll be at 1000

.

well, how could i be at the 1000 mark and not respond! yay!
under "tools" on the main menu bar at the top of Max, pick Light Lister. it's a big toolbar to control the basic parameters of all the lights in your scene from one place. i use it all the time, and was expecting to see a bunch of light after running your script and opening, but there was only one to control them all, which is what it does when your instance or reference them. so thanks for making them references!
i'm reluctantly starting up my laptop to work on my code.

Franklyn 553 posts
thanks a lot for that i didnt know max had a tool like that

. i think you should just work on the basic function of the script first because you will have to offer the user the option of whether or not they want to attach the omni's anyways so you need to get both halves working .

hype 2,964 posts
i just realized your script attaches the lights to the dummy, not the object.
so then what, you'll make it link the dummy to the sphere, then they move with it?
but they won't deform with it.

also, in that rendered frame you posted on the first page of this thread, can you post a wireframe of that? cuz if the lights are placed at the vertices of that white plane, it shouldn't be illuminating, right? the lights have to be a little in front of it for that lighting set up to work the way it is, right?
-
Franklyn 553 posts
yeah i set the plane to a white material with self ilumination set to 100

.
as for the dummy thing its just in there to help move the lights im not using it to help in the vert attachment thats the part im working on atm.

got it!

thanx for clarifying!
dude, i just set up a little scene with your light script, just some geometry inside a box, but wow, it looks awesome. its a great alternative to GI. I keep setting the sample range high, like 14, and the map size to 200. its great!

Franklyn 553 posts
what object did you use as the surface, could you post a small render ? .
-
hype 2,964 posts
its not really anything great as far as modelling and texturing goes. i can post a render when i get home tonight, but its just a box with one side removed and thickness, with some other geometry in it and a sphere hanging in the top middle of the room where a light would be. its just nice to see it doing all the soft shadows in the corners of the room and all that. it really looks like room lighting. i'm trying a bunch of different settings to see how fast i cna get it to render and still look as good as it does.

ok i've got the omni's attached to the vert BUT !! they've attached themselves to the same vert :'(. so now i have a sphere with about 482 omni's all attached to the same vert lol.
edit : IT WORKS OMG !!!!! :OPODOAODSAODOSADA HAHAAHHAHA.

here's a couple shots of me goofing off with your script at work. nothing fancy. used your script with a step value of 2, then i think i set the multiplier to about .04, map size to maybe 250, and sample range to 14.
