Breach for GLU contest

10 Aug 2005Ok this was an experimentation to figure out how to make a foam texture that I will use in my bottle animation.
Since we can submit more then one animation to the GLU contest, I submitted it already

The glitch in the right top corner is the glu logo reacting badly with my DOF -

A couple of things:
The spray coming off the whale seems to be too dispersed. As in its just going all over the place.
I think it should be more directional and much much much finer particles and lots more of them.
I think there needs to be some form of ripple action on the surface.
There is no foam or any residule splashes happening on the surface.
I think the main chance you would have for a glu3d entry is something that you couldnt do without a fluids simulator, or something that would be a very intense time consuming process if not done with a simulator. This thing looks like there is no glu3d action happening whatsoever.

11 Aug 2005C, I would of loved to add more particles, but to get a motion blur I had to turn them into a Glu pwrapper, and GLU as a serious problem with managing memory, the error that comes the most is out of memory and I have 1.5ghz of RAM, and my scene ain't that big, I worked with way bigger scenes then that, so I just abandon this for now, I will redo it if I win glu but this time I'll composite, for the ripple same reason, my water was more detail in the version I showed you a few days ago but cause of the GLU memory problem I had to shrink the plane mesh number so I lost my little wave effect, so a ripple I didn't even imagine what bugs I would of got.
But anyway this animation was mostly to test my texture, the idea of my foam texture is to have more details then the glumesh gave me and it worked. So I pretty happy with this. But beleive me I will redo this animation, since I'm planning to do a Whale documentary in the next few years. -

Glu is awesome but if I don't win it, I wouldn't buy it at the price they ask, the software as to many bugs, kinda like my laptop is rendering and decided to shut up, and lots of out of memory problem, like when you open your material editor and you have a big map bang out of memory. Kinda of bug I don't get when GLU is not installed.
It is a very awesome plug-in but those bugs are not worth the price, you need to plan to much compsition and when you use GI composition is often out of question. -

I do have crits all the same.
1, the ocean surface material is bloody fantastic. Except it looks like its breathing. The animation of the ocen surface is a fair way off. It reminds me of the chest of an ogre, not of the repetitive feel of a normal wave system. If you get what I mean.
2, the foam looks like milk.
3, I love it. best crit of all

Good to see it done
I agree with cam that the ocean shader is good...but the movement of it is still lacking.
Also....the particles look cool...but there's just not enough of them to give you a sense that it's an EPIC splash/scene. A HUGE splash/wake upon re-entry would help this piece even more

07 Sep 2005Agree with you guys, but for the particles I couldn't do it in layers cause I needed my reflection and since GLU is very buggy when it comes to managing memory, I had to sacrifice on the particles.
But for my CGTalk challenge I won't use GLU so I will put my 2GB of ram to good use on lots and smaller particles. And then I will see smoke coming out of my lappy since the image will be 2657x3636 pixels.
