Hey guys,
Thanks for checking it out and ESPECIALLY thanks for the critiques!
Despite the fact that it's in my character to cringe when I post things and ask for critiques because I'd like to think it's perfect and that there's nothing wrong with it....it's the suggestions and critiques that I end up appreciating the most, because I can take those and try to apply them all to my next piece.
hype: nah man I figured it would be a cop-out if I submitted this to the challenge too...so I'm going to do something different for it
aden: good call on the bright box man. That was one of the things that I sah as I was trying to get my final render out at 7am (because I had worked through the night on it)...so I was like "crap" and then "aaah...screw it"
richard: I know I pm'd ya about it....but so everyone else know, the smoke was all done in max. I set up a PArray particle system consisting of several thousand tiny spheres and 2 wind spacewarps controlling turbulence, all with a falloff material, and then rendered that sequence out and brought it into After Effects, where I blurred it, and layered it overtop the footage using the "Screen" blending mode.
Also good call on the "they don't seem to look at each other" comment....Pete's rig currently doesn't use an aim look-at constaint for the eyes (it just uses UI sliders/points), which means it's not only hard to aim them correctly, but it's also even harder to get them to focus on something while the head turns. I made some changes to his rig for this animation (set up a fingers UI, as well as a visible UI for the eyebrows instead of just the custom attributes), and I think for my next animation with this character I'm going to re-rig the eyes as well for that reason
jurk_boy: yep it's all hand animated in 3ds max 8. no plugins were used either, besides VRay as the renderer
global: I totally agree bro. One thing I've been struggling with is setting out defined poses at certain important intonations, and I'm glad you pointed out that you think it's lacking in this one because it means I've got something to work on next time. And lip sync is still something I'm practicing so I'll definitely check out that line you mentioned and see if I can think of a way to improve his pronounciations.
That being said.....I don't think I'm actually going to go and re-touch this animation, but as I mentioned above....I'm going to keep all those comments in mind for my next one.....which should be soon! (I'm trying to do 1 every weekend for the next while)
