Hi, this year, I entered to an architectural competition about a hotel in 2055. It could be anywhere in the world. I had to focus on new technology.
Here is the video presentation
:
With technology, architecture won?t be only the extension of the body, but the body itself will create the architecture. Today in 2055, people are physically connected to their room and people?s lifestyle has been changed. This relation is a kind of prosthetic architecture. When science and technology has changed over the time, people started to think again about the space: why to have furniture in a room when you don?t need them for a moment? Why to have a hotel when there are no guests?
Since few years, people wanted to connect the world together. The Atlantic Ocean hasn?t be crossed by cars, bicycles or pedestrians in the past. But now everything changed. Since 2050, people have crossed the ocean by an intelligent tunnel under the water that can modify itself with the flow of circulation, can be divided and scaled for climatic considerations. Just imagine the experience of this travel under the sea. It?s an open window to the Atlantic. You?ll see a great deal of wonderful fishes and whales. You?ll also discover new sea creatures that we didn?t know fifty years ago. Some islands have been created along with these tubes. One of them is a hotel island: an intelligent hotel. This is a place for relaxation, rejuvenation and exploration of the sea to learn his history and understand how to protect it.
The development of smart materials responds to your needs to build space with architecture instead of with furniture. The rooms are made from a material that can change its propriety. The body can deform the structure to create its perfect bed, seat and adapt its bath with its needs. Tactile screens are everywhere and form an active and interactive interface to control the configuration of the structure. Wall display creates a virtual world around the body and will be transformed with mood changes. You can control you space from every corners of your room: see television in one corner and then move the screen to the opposite place. You can also change the transparency of the walls to make your own windows and change color and materials appearance. This is more than an interactive shell, this is a plug-in room connected to your body, to be manipulated for an optimized form.
This hotel is auto-reproductive: the material is a small nano-laboratory that can duplicate itself and create others rooms. When the building is out of season, the rooms will die and the hotel will disappear; only a memory will still remain. But when the hotel comes alive again, these cells will be divided and differentiated into specific functions that are a specialisation like with a stem cell. Everything is made from the same materials that form tunnels, hotel and hotel rooms.
The hotel is self-sustaining: the energy is stored in the smart materials from the sun and from the water flow. When it?s cold, the rooms will become smaller to preserve the heat. The skin of the structure will react with the environment. The material will provide ventilation, light and electricity: no needs of wires and pipes. The walls will adapt the ventilation with the needs of people. If no one is inside, the ventilation will be less important than if a physical activity is happening. As the hotel disappears when it?s out of season, no energy waste will be lost. Also, this propriety will minimize its impact on the environment, without conflict to the environment.
Enjoy!
