New Character Animation Demo Reel needs critiques!

Here's my latest character animation demo reel. It's pretty much in its final stages, but I could use all the feedback you have to give me about any aspect of the reel. If there's too much of something, not enough, if you feel it's out of order, if there's anything that looks wrong about the animation, etc.
I'm thinking of adding a weight exercise of some kind, also.
I've decided against using any additional background music because I have reason to think it's not a good idea to do that.

02 Sep 2006Hey there! Very nice reel overall. One thing I think you need to work on is moving holds. Right now most all your characters, at one point or another, become totally frozen. They go from one pose to another and freeze. This pretty much never happens in real life, so it looks kinda weird and distracting. In the first clip I found myself looking at the guy in the foreground more than the moving guy playing the piano because he was just staying too perfectly still.
This problem can pretty much be eliminated if you go in and smooth out your animation curves, and tweak and add a few keys. Other than that, you've got some really good clips in there. I'm no expert in animation so I can't critique those very much, nice lipsync and timing and such.

Thanks for the critique! I'm going to do exactly as you say and fix those moving holds. I'm going to learn more about how to do them as well as possible. So far I've been experimenting with different ways of eliminating "dead spots" in the line, but I believe I've been less than sucessful so far. I appreciate your taking the time to look at my reel greatly.

i agree with effstops about the frozen poses. It's quite noticeable specially on the animation of generi jumping and landing with his hands. I personally think you hold one pose for too long, and then suddenly make a transition. Maybe if you had more in betweens or like it was said before, smoothed out the curves. I see you're already workin on your flaws so i guess you had all these crits in mind beforehand.
Like the acting clips. I have to admit i got the same impression as effstops: focused more on the character on the foreground, even when the one playing the piano was in motion all the time.
I wish i could have a reel of work like yours. Very nice!! -

I'm glad the characters look like plasticine! If there's one thing I hate its CG animation where everything looks like hollow plastic!

I am receiving a lot of good feedback which agrees with you about the spacing of the jumping animation. The movement keyframes seem to be spaced too closely together for comfort! The holds seem to be too long as a result.
Here's an update to the "Goodbyeee!" animation with new moving holds:

I hope this is a little closer to what would be considered correct moving holds. I took into consideration the character's momentum as well as doing what I could to make the holds look "comfortable".

02 Sep 2006Much much better, Alex! You could still tweak them a little but you've dramatically improved that clip with just a little bit of touch-up. Good work!
