30 Oct 2006Well, I was inspired to do a little compositing practice/learning based on an image I saw posted by an artist on conceptart.org
The premise is very simple...just a few spaceships flying by...with one specifically launching from a pad attached to a mountainside.
There is no tracking/video in this piece, the environment is just several images I found on google of sunsets/mountains which were color-corrected to match the scene, and then projected onto rough geometry.
Everything from the modelling of the spacecraft, to the animation to the final render with audio was done in about 8 hours last night. Everything (excluding the particle passes) was rendered with Vray. The particles (which were created using PFlow) were rendered using the Scanline Renderer.

I like the way it all comes together. The camshake when the ships pass, the blur in the hot exhaust, the little pause when the ship's turning and the intense pull away from the ship and of course the sound effects (where do you get them anyway?). It just all fits like a glove
About the environment, what's the secret behind the projecting it on the geometry and still having it so clear and without perspective POV problems (if you know what I mean)? Did you use some displacement map to make the rock disappear behind some other geometry or something?

30 Oct 2006Enjoyed i did Mr. Ibele! That was great man, I really like how everything looks well together, I'd really like to know what's the secret behind these images projected onto a geometry - i'd love it if you or Hype had a spare few mins and did a tutorial on how to get great results from it.
The actual snow falling looks amazing man - is that just PFlow? I really like the fact that its not uniform, and is come is from screen right and goes travelling up and down, really reminds me of what it's like to be on a mountain when it's snowing.
Also - how did you go about creating the burners? The blurry heat coming from the back of those bad boys? Looks sweet!

30 Oct 2006Hey Tyson, this is really cool. I really like it, everything is spot on, except for one thing.....
your lighting on the back mountain is coming from the wrong angle based on where your sun is. You wouldn't have any of the harsh shadows you have from that angle. You might get some where areas would be occluded, but in the image, the sun is coming from the right and closer to the camera, where as in your comp it's right behind the mountain, in fact, the whole side of the mountain would be quite a bit darker, but there is snow on it, so you would still get some bounce from that.
That's my only crit. I love the movement of the ships and the sound is awesome! You should post the pic you used for reference, I think I recognize it but i'm not sure. AUSOM as per usual.

30 Oct 2006that was great! the thing i found most impressive was the snow on the launchying pad! really nice stuff!
oh, and my camera mapping video tutorial has been done for a week, i just can't get it uploaded to my server for some reason. i'll keep trying.

30 Oct 2006nice work T. i really like the atmosphere in the scene its nice and mellow with a relaxing palette of colors. also the motion and geometry isn't as extreme and action packed as some of your other animations and the sounds really complimented the work . the ships have a rather interesting design they sort of look like the scanners in hl2 can you link us to the concept ?. oh and how much of the 8hours was spent on rendering

30 Oct 2006cool site that you got the inspiration from. you should certainly send a link to your animation to the guy who did the speed painting, i'm sure he'd be quite flattered to see his work come to life.
and i'm still trying a couple things with getting my tutorials posted. its still too long, i may redo it again. -

Anyway you forgot one of the questions
Where did you find theses really cool soundfiles.. Have you a sound engeineer who works for you somwhere in your cave?
I'm quiete curious about that, all of yours animations always using some great sounds banks.. I wonder where you get them, or, how you made them
I'm also curious about how you works with sound.. did you fit the animation to the sound, or fit the sound to the animation?
