I just joined and this is my first posting!
I hope this is up to your standards...
I made this creature that is a mixture of a antler + dragon + bird.
It was done in Maya, and I think I did pretty well for texturing for the first time.
Any feedback will be great! Thanks.

I think it looks pretty cool, I do have a couple of issues though, the antler + horn look like they made of wood, and are very very boxish, and they curve inwards at their bases which I dont think should happen... also, where the skin turns into the beak doesnt look quite right, I think you work in some little feathers or something to make the integration better, or at least model the beak into it, instead of having the difference based on the texture alone. Skin on any animals doesnt go all jaggedy mixing into a hard, smooth surface. The mouth looks great, apart from the back corner which seems very pinched together, all in all a great start to a whole character... you going to finish it? -
15 Dec 2006very nice first post! Yeah, Cam pretty much covered all the main points, I don't know how far you've played around with shaders and lighting yet, but I'd be willing to bet that if you made some tweaks to the model, messed around with your shaders a bit more, you'd have a reelworthy creature there. It reminds me of the nasty bird-ish guys from the dark crystal. Pretty sweet.

Nice work, and I agree with Cam's crits. except for the one about the horns curving inwards towards the base - maybe that's not real and accurate, but it doesn't bother me. you certainly deserve some credit for your first post being an organic creature - i've been here a year and i don't think i've posted one organic thing at all!

I know how hard you worked on him and think it turned out very well!

I think in a little while I'm going to fix the horns to make it look not as wood-like,
and where the beak meets for sure. Maybe make the body too
.

16 Dec 2006A real nice start, but
- the eyes have no living character. Thats the soul of your character, you have to improve here
- use fur to get better results!

quinn paynter 356 posts16 Dec 2006I dont agree with adding the fur. It looks good, kinda mix between bird, rhino, alligator and deer. Dont see where fur fits in there. Thats just a cheap way to not have to texture it. I agree with what cameron said though. Lookin nice man ^__^ -
