hey, that's cool hair! weird - this just popped up, but the date say Feb 2. I think something was screwy...
anyway, depends on what kind of look your going for. The hair looks pretty cool! the head, though... if you're going for a stylized "Dark Crystal" kind of character, then it looks spectacular! If you're going for a realistic human, then it's a good start, but still has a ways to go.
Hair looks great, though. is that Max 9 ?

Well, this looks good as a wip, I guess I should ask, what do you want critique on? You say you are going for a child? realistic or artistic? I bet you'd get more responses if you posted a wireframe, and possibly even a couple different angles, and maybe a reference of what you are going for...
Off the top of my head, I'd say that the head is too squashed vertically. The eyes are too big compared to the rest of the features, and the cheeks are really chubby, rather than having bones to hold them up, you kind of have "cheek baloons". The ears could use a bit more thickness. For starters.....
The hair looks good, but it honestly looks like the default hair. Try making it more dense, with thinner hairs, adding some curl, put in some different lengths, style it, do something interesting with it.
Hopefully this is some good feedback for you, did you go out of your head or use reference for this one?
