Alrighty.
A couple of months ago I started this seagull model (meeuw means seagull in dutch btw) but only this week I got around to working some more on it. But now I dislike my eyes, I don't know why. So I quickly "sketched" a new look, but I'm not really sure which one I like better now.
One 1 hand I like the old look, he looks much friendlier that way, but I dislike his huge empty sockets, and I can't really think of a way to fill them up.
On the other hand, the new eyes are much cuter imo, albeit less cartoony. As someone suggested it also captures the character of the animal better. But they remind me of the finding nemo seagulls, and I don't really know if that's a good thing. (I don't want to copy them D:)
Enough with the banter, this thread is worthless without pics:
The old version:
The new version:
(I know he looks a bit sheepish atm, but it's basically just a test.)
What do you think, keep this one, or rather the old one?

Yeah but I don't really like the old eyes :/ I think these eyes resemble the real thing more.
And as my gf put it: A seagullis an immensely stupid animal. That animal is just retarded.
Imo the eyes make him look even more retarded. But they do look more like the Finding nemo ones -_-

Getting there ... I added the wings & tail. I think I may make him more compact too ...
Anyways, I had a question for the more expert people around. Is there a way to attach the wings to the body so they can fold open & close again without crazy deformations and such? Or is there another way?
I think Tyson used a seperate element/mesh for his body & wings on his sparrow animation, is that correct? Would that work in my case?

Hey Jake,
Well...the feathers on my sparrow were all separate objects...but in your case (since you don't want to use bones) ...you could easily rig up the wings using a couple of bend modifiers.
Just select the vertices on the wings that you want to be affected by the bend modifiers and then add a bend modifier to the stack. For ease of use, you might want to also wire the bend value to a slider in the viewport.
Hope that helps!

Hmm, must look into that, thanks!
I actually want to rig it in the near future, but I was wondering if there was a way to construct your mesh, so that you can fold & unfold the wings, without having supercrazy ugly deformations and such.
Right now both wings are seperate objects, so I was wondering if I'd have to keep it like that, or if I can attach it to the rest of the body mesh so it's all 1 piece, like a real bird.
I hope that makes sense :/

Another set of new eyes. I like these better, but what do you think?

i would say it is much better like that (for the eyes) it just looks great so far, even though it is still a WIP
i think the next thing you should work on should be the mouth(the connection between it and the boddy...)
could we et a top view to check the wings shape?
also, what rendering method did you use?

Good start, try to make it more smooth for a much better organic look
