hey guys, today i stared making a fire in cg to practise with particles and here is what i got after an hour and a half, it is made with Pflow and rendered with scanline.

crits are welcome as always

cool richard! looks really good! my only crit would be that the tendrils coming off the top feel too "fluidy", meaning they kinda all sort of sway together, where as fire doesn't really seem to do that most of the time. But this looks great so far! I'm definitely going to want to see screenshots of your PFlow at some point, cuz I'm always chasing CG fire!!

a little bit. the color looks better in this one, a bit more campfire-y. but color is a very dependant variable, so who's to say the color looks right or wrong.
the motion still looks a bit wavy as a whole. don't get me wrong, it's awsome fire! it's just that, if it were a solid mesh rather than particles, it would sort of look like cloth blowing in some wind (wind coming from beneath it). fire has more tendrils, more "fingers", individual wavy motions rather than one big wavy motion.
keep going!

dude, this is looking great so far. I agree with what hype said, and I think it feels ethreal. It would work perfect for magic fire; as real fire, it's almost there, keep going man!

that second link isn't working, but that first one looks AWESOME!
Now I'm ready to see you particle flow, space warp settings, and shader!!

hey hype, i jixed the link... and if you behave, you'll get your cookie
i'll post one later on tonight (screenshot)

dude, how the heck are you doing all this?! just PFlow?
these look magnificent! Is there some secret you've discovered?
-
Richard 1,943 posts
indded there is, well, no not really, it's just Pflow yea.
glad you like them, i am starting to get a good grip of fire well at least some of it.
i have just a wind with turbulence, and about 1000 particles in general, a spawn operator and a few age tests
oh and i updated the line one

holy crap, man... i DEMAND a video tutorial, or something! that's awesome! even when i could get fire to look good on that shot of me waving my hand around, i think it would've taken tons more tweaking to get it to look right spilled out on the ground! really amazing work!

the funny thing is that, it's not, once i a had my basic fire , it's just very small changes, and everytime i make a new one, i try improving the flames a little. new one is on it's way, it's on on a moving object.
i'll do a tut if i find the time for it, i hope i will

here we go... the flame motion is not right, i think that's because the motion of the ball is wrong and also cause i have to change and tweak the wind and a few operators

yep, that looks weird, like it's shooting off some kind of weird sparks or something. doesn't look like fire like that.

i tryed changing the shader, it's definatly not from that... i'll take care of that tomorow if i have time and get that fliame right
here is the new shader

yeah, that second one is getting there.
what are you adjusting?
did you build this off of allan mckay's work? are you using his image motion blur trick?

Absolutely incredible!
This has to rank up there with some of the best firey stuff I've ever seen produced with standard pflow + shading.

hype - i was playing around with the wind, added a drag changed the gravity okayed with the particle test itsef, like the spawn operator , the birth operator and others
cameron - i watched his tu about a year ago, so i am using a few tricks i remember from it but most of it is really differant from his, come all from me
as for the shader
it's a material with self illumination some opacuty and some specular and highlight. then there also is the motion blur pass that helps to then there is some color corection and brightness and cantrast within 3dsmax
here is a better one than the one i did last night

thx iest i'll try making it slower next time.
lol at that video
in case you wana know, the usal frame render time is about 4 seconds
here is my latest test, i am trying to make the fire "interact" with light and shadows. i try to see how the fire would look if it was surrounded by other objects. here is my first test, still a few tweakings are needed i think,
what do you think?
(nevermind the weird stuff going on when the fire is off, i just forgot to turn off a light)
