Well....I come to you all with this animation and a heavy heart (since there's still soooooooooooo much that needs to be fixed/changed/re-done etc...but we simply ran out of time for the competition over at cgtalk)
For all of you that don't know....this was my (and Danny Robashkin's) entry into the current "Big Freeze" fx challenge at cgtalk...where the theme was to freeze stuff....only on a huuuge scale (ie...cities...buildings...vehicles etc).
I'm not looking for critiques because I already know how bad it is (ie....ugly bubbly clouds in the background....no shot continuity......etc....let's just say I'm not as happy with the way this entry turned out as I was with the way my old Car Crash entry did

)
Anyways...it was still fun and a good learning process

By the way....just so everyone knows, the clip was created by both me and Danny Robashkin.
I was in charge of:
-helicopter motion animation
-oil rig
-dock and dock breakup/debris
-sound effects (which will be more audible once I upload the music-less version)
Danny was therefore in charge of:
-atmospherics
-water
-extra dock debris particles (any of the smaller ones you see)
-prop boats
-final composite
...the background music was AC/DC of course!

Question, how did you do your water?
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
The water was done in Maya by my partner Danny
By the way...as noted, due to time constraints...this is the final (even though I definitely still don't consider it "finished"

haha u actually dont think thats good ? its probably a bit hard to follow but i dont really see anything wrong as for the explosion the fuel in the fuel tank froze i think thats why it crashed.
it would have been nice to see it freeze a bit slowerbut i like the fast pace its nice ..whats your biggest regret?
maybe its the laptop but i dont see these "bubbles in the clouds"
also how did u do the clouds coming in is it a video on a plane ?
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Well....my biggest regret would be the fact that we didn't end up having time to do the "middle" shot (yes...there was supposed to be ANOTHER shot between the 2 that you see there).....that shot would have made the whole scene make a lot more sense and would have made it possible to transition from start to finish without that cheesy additive dissolve in the middle
By the "bubbly clouds" I'm simply referring to the way that the big wall of incoming cloud looks weird, simply because it's timelapse cloud footage projected into the background

....would have been nice to do an actual volumetrics simulation, or at least find a better video matte! Ah well...you do what you can eh

Mate, awesome... Been waiting a long time to see this.
I think everyone is overlooking the Oil Rig.
is that a 3d model??? are u for real, you made that? Incredible!!!!!!
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
i saw the oilrig and it looked to real so i assumed it was a composite
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Yes...it's a composite hehe....
I'm not THAT hardcore........although I did model a lot of it (and projected the image texture onto that model) in order to get proper parralax

Ya we were a bit late entering ours, but Roberto went and added us to the voting thread/page once we got it uploaded (which means that yes, the people who voted in the first few hours that it was online didn't get a chance to see it)

WOOOAAA:::
if you had managed to put the middle shot in there, the other competiters would have no chance at all...and i doubt they have now
great work, tyson and danny !!!
btw: is he around here, too?
keep up
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Nope...danny's not around here

He doesn't do the "forum" thing too much I don't think.

That looks really good man! I love the first part when the helicopter comes to the camera with the storm behind.
Which render engine did you use for that?

great work indeed but what came to me a little bit nasty is that crash. l mean a helicopter made of steal or what, does not crash into peaces like a frozen ice ?
but again the animation and the mod is awsome

Hoooray! We won best animation!
The rio team won in all other catagories though.
I'm getting deja vu from the results of my car crash competition (ie....I won best animation and the other guy won in all other catagories

)
