Mate, this stuff is pretty cool and that metal texture is awesome.
After a few months of these, you will end up with enough stuff to fully stock a busy room with secondary models.

not bad
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
yea you all should try the challenges some time, they're really really fun.
@cam: who are u callin secondary mate? hehe, under an hour each isnt bad
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
here's another.

Cameron 2,374 posts
Nice piece and a nice idea.
The rendering lets it down a tad though, and from the look of it, the top view looks like a better view

.

Yeah i agree with the Cam man on this one,
I also think a more refined specular highlight would make the perspective picture come to life. Just a more unique highlight to each piece. I realise it's a speed piece but i reckon that would rock!
Cheers,
~Todd.

thanks for the replies....although i wasnt focused on rendering, i hear where yer comin from. i tried to get some higher specular highlights on there but it looked weird so i gave up and i was frustrated.

here's two more i worked on last night:
remember, these are speed modelling challenges not rendering challenges. i was too tired last night to do a decent render/texturing job.

Haha...I love the idea behind rubik's bomb. I'm assuming you have to unscramble it to stop the explosion?

the topic for this week was 3d avatar. since i like pirates i made a pirate....who coincidentally happens to be in the shape of an egg. i put a decent amount of detail in the shoes i think
-
Global 1,589 posts
Hehe - nice. Though I'd like to see the results of a non-speed model
Is that a spline cage you have for the shoe there?
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
i dont have the concentration to do anything non-speed modelling.

i think i have add or sumthin. anywyays, no that is edit mesh with nurbs applied in meshsmooth

Wow pretty cool, i always thought speed modeling was good to get adjusted to max after a long trip away from it.
Some of your textures are pretty cool especially one of the metal textures you posted on a previous one, the one cammy said the metal was sweet.
All in all looks like your having fun

finally i'm gettin back into the swing of things. this weeks topic was perfume bottle. mine's an empty one.
-
Global 1,589 posts
Oooh now that's a very nice render! I like this one a lot - great highlights, nice cool colours and the DOF sets it up for a really nice composition. Me likey!
I'm often very impressed with these speed models - but I gotta say I was quite surprised at the 52 minutes taken for the bottle though (or is that geometry in the background that was also modelled?)
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
the 52 minutes went long b/c i get sidetracked with rendering parameters and stuff while i'm modelling, also i tried to copy the bottle in the ref pic to exact. the plug at the top is actually a sphere with a cylinder decending down that i edit meshed into the shape(as opposed to the quicker methoed of line + lathe). also, the main bottle was made from a pyramid object so i had to chamfer alot of the vertices to get it to mesh smotoh correctly. i'm sure i could do it in 10 minutes if i tried again.
edit: here's the full size ref pic

Ooo...those are some cool caustics

....might be a bit much but it still looks purdy!
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
actually the things directly below the glass arent caustics, the table its sitting on just has a weird reflection of the object.

BColbourn 2,323 posts

-

Its ok mate, thats why you've got this forum to nurture you. Did you notice your link up the top in the highlights, eh??? eh!!????
Just wait till me and tyson get a bit of spare time, we will join you and blitz those speed modelling challenges!
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
i did notice my puzzle one in the highlights(which i was told by a moderator had a fairly good chance of winning) and i think you for that cam
