i did model a normal clock, and i tried what you suggested only to find out that its far too many polygons for reactor to handle in a softbody, so i bent it and added noise for more-or-less the same feel and this way i have more control over it too.
edit: i jsut tried to go back to my file which i find out now has been corrupted, so i'm back to my old clock without the melting part.
btw, this is the image i'm going after:
