Sony Product Transformations *FINAL ANIM ON PAGE 3

22 Oct 2005Hey everyone....for the next couple of weeks I'm going to be working on some more in-house stuff here at MAKE, using products made by Sony (ie...the work isn't actually being done for sony...we're simply using their products for in-house animation tests).
The idea is to take 5 of their electronics products (ie...things like cameras, tvs, dvd players etc etc) and create a 20-ish second animation where each product morphs into the next one, transformers-style.
Anyways...I started today by making one of their Cybershot cameras.
Everything was made from scratch including all models and materials, and the renderer used was VRay (glossy reflections baby!). For reference I just used some pictures I found on google, since I don't actually have one of these sitting around here
4 more models to go, and then I get to animate!

22 Oct 2005Oh...and don't mind some of the aliasing/sampling errors....I didn't bump up any of the settings for this render....
...and also note that this was rendered without GI. -

22 Oct 2005I was thinking about making a PSP hehe....as for tutorial....I'll have to think about that, after all...I don't even know how I'm going to do the transformations at this point!

26 Oct 2005judging from the subtle reflections that i can see ...they appear to have way too much difusion like the material on the laptop ..but as u can see in this picture http://www.random-review.com/images/rev ... 3c_1_b.JPG
the reflections are much sharper im not sure if its the material or the fact that u probably dont have much to be reflected..maybe its just me lol i dont know much about photorealism. -
26 Oct 2005Yes...the glossy reflections on the screen are mainly there because if they were any sharper you'd be able to see the crappy black and white cards I have throughout the scene (which make the other reflections look good)
I'll be tweaking those settings when the objects are in their final environment so that the reflections are a lot sharper though.
Good eye either way! -

Have you had any more thoughts on the 'how to' yet? Mindboglingly complex rigging of some sort? Morphing?
I'd be interested to know how you go about planning that kind of thing, ie thumbnails or concept sketches of how you want the final shot look to look.
And are you going to make it dance? -

28 Oct 2005hey tyson did u do all of this in maya ? because if u figured out how to work with huypershade in such a short span of time ur better than i thought u were lol. nice animation i scrubbed through it and i like how the transformation is not symetrical nice job ... are u going to do a model swap to take care of those dirty seams? or are they too small to get rendered.

Btw....all of the semi-invisible objects are simply open-gl representations of what will be completely hidden in the final render....so don't worry about those (and I apologize for them since they make viewing the animation a bit messier)

Btw...for those of you wondering....this one was a son-of-a-mother to setup and animate ....I'm definitely glad the next 2 will be much simpler, because I won't have to compact something the size of a dishwasher into something the size of a book LOL -

Man it's been a tough week....over 600 frames I've had to render at anywhere between 20 minutes and 5.5 hours PER FRAME
But I think it's worth it since it's all looking good so far -
