haha, I just like it because it is garuntee'd results that I can tweak, their way if its not right the first time, you gotta start over.
Maya's Booleans never work for me.

What is the concept of built for smoothing???? Even Denny's model can be smooth by bevelling the edges. In max you just create a spline drawing of the gear and add shell modifier. No booleans at all and its right the first time everytime and you can edit it next time since the spline is still there under the stack. In lw the spline can be copied in other layers for editing.
Meshflow is important even if its just a gear. There's just a right way and another way to do it.
