31 May 2007Hey man. I really liked it! It was very fun to look at. If I may be so frank, there were a few things that, for me, took away from the overall quality:
-The bitmap trees and foliage. Although they did bring back sweet memories to Operation Flashpoint (the game
) they did really stand out (in a bad way) in the short.
-The animation was a little rough in places, but nothing too worrying
-I was kind of hoping to see the monster kicking the naughty goblin's ass at the end. Or falling on his knees in despair or something.
-The camera movements in the beginning were a little too dynamic for my tastes, but then again, I'm hopelessly oldfashioned
Excellent choice of music btw, it really fit the overall atmosphere imo. Great work! Kudos to you dear sir! -

Jake- the reason i used the flat planes for the bushes and the background trees was because i really didn't want to spend to much time on the environments. Usually if i do that than i get burned out on the project. so i just put them together quickly.
im glad you guys like it for the most part tho. I've been going back and forth I know plenty could have been done to improve it but i am very happy with it over all

Agree with the comments on texturing and stuff, at points it did have a 'game engine' look to it. But quite a mammonth project really, how long did it take?
btw, spending a little more time on background elements would prove beneficial, as that's the sort of thing you can re-use. I never went big on modelling and texturing, but if I had gone that way I'd plan on building a library -
02 Jun 2007Joe, this was really cool! it did feel a bit game-engine-ish, but it was really fun! game-engine-ish isn't a bad thing, unless you were shooting for photorealism, and i don't think you were.
I think the poor snail got totured the most, though! -

The amount of atmosphere and good funny spirit that this animation reveals was stunning. The story was good to.
I'am not a lightning expert, but in your future projects, you could impruve it a little bit. Try e-light scrip (if you are a max user)... yes... use it for those diffuse shadows that are so missing in this shot.
I'am courently work on my new animation, and I will post a thread soon, but take a look how e-light can improve outdoor scenes.
