Just join this forum, post my reel(to see whether will it be remove, coz of noobish), haha...anyway

I just graduated and currently job hunting, so i thought i would post my reel up here to get some comments and critics.

Sorry about the lack of response on my part...I didn't see this one!

I think most of your stuff is pretty great. I'm not a compositor, but there were some pretty real looking shots in there!

The lighting was pretty off in the balcony explosion scene though, in my opinion. The character seemed to be almost fully lit from all around (especially at the moment of the explosion), whereas the scene itself was lit with the little lightbulbs from above....I can only imagine how tricky it must have been to light that scene though, so cudos nonetheless.

Maybe zach or hype could step in and comment on the compositing itself? I'm not too sharp on that stuff.

I think you've got a competent reel for student work. You seem to understand the process and technical aspects of compositing fairly well. But your "look" needs a bit more development in my opinion, and that will come with time and practice, and a job that provides you with art directors and footage that was shot with a higher than DV res camera.

Since this is your reel, i'm not sure if you plan on going back in and re-working any of those shots, but if you do, I'd spend most of my time making your cg look more detailed for the things like the outside of the building, And man, if you're going to comp stuff into full cg backgrounds.... Use projections wherever possible. It will make your plate fit together well. In fact, i'd say that's the one thing that's detracting from your work at this point. It looks composited. Does that make sense? I'd recommend going just a tad smaller on the added in cg stuff at first. Try shooting things on a set, and extending the set with cg, and then move on to full cg sets. They're a bit harder than you think, and you'll learn a ton matching them up.

I should say that your lighting tests look great man! That keyboard one was photoreal! Excellent work. On your comps, the cg was all kind of off in scale. The one where it really stuck out was the hallway one, where the actor is looking into the window on the left. The chairs felt a bit big, and it seemed that the actor was just a bit small in the scene, and the lighting didn't match so much. But that's the problem with small greenscreen shoots. They tend to be overlit because you want to light the screen evenly, and in that process of balancing everything out, the colors get blown. That's why when you shoot greenscreen stuff, make sure you underexpose a bit, Because you can always bring the colors up, but after you blow them out, that data is lost....Forever......

Well man, hopefully this helped out a bit, I know I rambled a little. Keep working and keep posting. That's how you'll learn more!

really cool demo reel! especially considering that was all DV (keying on DV can be quite a pain in the..). I agree with alot of what Tyson and Zach said, especially about the lighting being off on the guy in the door exploding shot. It is possible to relight him - it requires alot of garbage rotos and color correction. But all in all, the majority of your shots looked really good. A couple times in the breakdowns I could see edges, but by the time you added in layers of atmosphere and color correction, they were pretty well hidden. nice work! One shot that bothered me a little bit was the first one of the breakdowns, the guy kind of slumping with the wooden bars behind him. There was a far BG and a near BG (the bars), and they felt a little too locked together.

This is a pretty nice compositing reel, and I think it really shows that you have a pretty good idea of what goes into pulling a greenscreen.

ps - have you guys noticed that sometimes when people make new posts, they don't show up for a while, until someone responds to them? I've noticed it alot lately. Like, I'll see someone new has joined, and I'll click on their name, and it will indicate that the person has only made 1 post so far, and I'll click on it, and it will take me to their post. But if I try to find it by just navigating to where I know it is in the forum, it doesn't show up.

So,.... i just got a job(as a lighter), so while i'm learning the pipeline here(and i don't have my pc at the accommodation), i definitely wont have the time to do the reel now, i hope i'll have the chance to retouch it soon! or maybe just get another fresh start.

Well, don't want to make it sound like a disclaimer or sth, just some story,
The front-part-compositing was my final-year project in uni. Actually its given a year, but i change the story on 2nd semester, which means i've to catch up the time i've lost, i've made numerous mistake thru the whole production, like Zach mention, some of my shot was overexposed, and the data was lost....forever.... some of it was really bad lighting on both actors and the-greenly-painted-brick-wall, it was all for one reason, i dont wanna take much time off the actors as they are unpaid, and i'm unprepared/lack the skill of/first-timer on live-action lighting and directing

Hehe, yea, hope i have a chance to do more shootings, either on cg set extension or any intergated stuff..i'll keep in mind what you guys said, projection, detailed bg, scale, underexposed, differentiate fg/bg/bbg, etc etc.

Gonna learn a lot more from ppl like you guys or colleague around here. Ow man, i miss my pc, cant even online at home right now, geez, right now, i'll just have to concentrate on work then... :>
