Well let's get the ball bouncing when it comes to 3d work posted in this forum
This is going to be a regularly updated WIP thread, concerning my entry into this month's VFX Challenge over at cgtalk. The theme is "Car Crash".
I won't go into much detail as to how my entry is going to pan out...because as you see the updates it'll be pretty self-explanatory...but I will say that's it's all about a car, and an angry robot hehe
Anyways...here's the latest render. It's a combination of the first and second shot of the "film", and I'm currently calling these shots final.

15 Jun 2005Thats looking fantastic mate!
My only quibble with what you have so far is that it looks like the car doesnt move up or down with the bumps of the road. The lack of vertical movement of the car is the only thing throwing it off IMO.
Great work, can't wait to see it finished. -

Great lighting and reflections on the car body - the glow on the headlights is very nice (calls for a mini tut on glowing things!
hehe)
I'll second what Cam has said though, some more vertical movement, perhaps a slight bounce on actual wheels - though I guess it is a pretty flat straight road.
One thing for me... I thought the camera work at the start was fantastic the shift in DOF, the shake and really nice zoom shifts, but there doesn't seem to be any DOF in the second shot and the camera movement seems to float a little (I may be wrong what with the avi compression)
After the fantastic, lively camera movement in the first shot it'd be nice to have more of the same in the second shot Just my two cents... -

Can you be my new friend? The only thing that really caught my attention was when the camera pulls away, That shot seems too controlled to me. Given the nature of the camera movement throughout the animation it looked to me as though it wasn't chaotic enough. I realise that this may be for afew reasons.
I think the pulled away shot is a perfect break up of action which allows the car to be obscured by overpass supports which i think is great. It just looks like to me the camera is fixed on the car which makes the shot look a little out of place to me as if the world revolves around the car instead of the car existing in the world. I'd be interested to see how it might look if the camera perhaps was leading the car a little or perhaps was behind the car trying to catch up?
Do you want to tell us who that robot guy is? I want to know! lol

17 Jun 2005Hehe - now that was a little unexpected!
And a very nice surprise it was too!
Looks fantastic bud - Great camerawork too (I do kinda go with what Todd is saying, perhaps have the car move in the frame slightly on that long shot.) The transition to that shot is perfect, though the cut back to the closer shot doesn't quite work for me... perhaps a cut to a static(ish) camera facing the incoming car then the shot from the rear of the car as it zooms off towards the overpass. (hmm not a great suggestion, bit passe but you get the idea)
Again on the camera work - gotta say that the transition of focus, when we first see the robot is spot on!
I think the lighting levels are good (turn up your contrast Cam!) In fact I still think the ambient lighting on the bulidings is slightly too bright... heh, maybe I have my contrast up too high! Again on the lighting front, I think the road illumination from the headlights is a little too close to the car.
Nice touch on the bits of paper getting sucked under the car - one more thing though... is it me, or is the road now very dry? -

Yes...the water reflections were removed from the road...which shaved about a minute off of render times
I think I'll go back and fix the camera work in that shot as suggested...so in the next update...expect that to be redone...as well as some new shots with Mr. robot! -
19 Jun 2005UPDATE. Added a few new shots, fixed a few shots...and started on SOUND design!
Please note that there is still quite a bit of work I have to do with the current sound line-up...a whole bunch of sound fx have yet to be added in the area of the animation where the robot starts running (so it might sound a little "empty")...and a lot of the sound levels still need to be adjusted because some sounds are a bit overpowering....but otherwise...I hope you like it!
Btw...although I welcome critiques as always, due to time contraints I probably won't be going back to rework any of the shots you see in this clip. -
20 Jun 2005Just got back from a weekend away to find this fantastic anim waiting for me! )
No real time for me to crit right now, but just wanted to post a quick note somewhere along the lines of "OMG! that's great!"
Really like the robot, brings on a whole new level when we see him. The chase is great (an interesting run cycle, which at first I thought looked 'awkward' but looking again it works rather well and is a nice break from the 'norm') As for the leap on to the car... perfect ending for a teaser trailer!
Well done again bud - look forward to more updates -

Agree with Global about the robots running cycle. At first seemed very strange but did grow on me till I loved it.
Bloody awesome mate, you're definately in for a chance with this anim.

Your animation looks really good.
The sound really helped it out.
Questions I have:
1.What's the robot all about? ie: What's his purpose?
Is his framework scratch resistant. Has he suffered any smash ups where he might be showing signs of damage?
2.How will this ani end? Does the robot remove the driver? Does the driver shake him off? Is the robot removed by another outside souce? (ie: a shooter from a roof top, etc.)
It would be kinda cool if the robot ripped open the car roof like a tincan. Ripped out the driver, and cast him aside at the current speed, maybe follow the drivers body as it slides along the roadway, and maybe finaly coming to a rest as it smashes into a solid object with a bone crushing gooie splat noise. Fade to black, and back up again on a scrap yard. As you pan the yard you get to the robot squating amoungst a heap of scrap ( his home ), and he's surrounded by licence plates. ( The latest being the one he just took.)
Taking it one step further, the robot then twitches as he's alerted to another speeder, and off he goes. The pan starts again, this time ending on a mother in front of some sort of monitoring device that scans the roadways for speeders. Beside her, some sort of reminder of her son, who by other surounding objects, was obviously killer in a car crash.
Just some ideas.
Your skills have improved so much over the past year! This is really really nice.

That's actually a really cool idea! If only I had time to implement it
You see...this is for a contest that wraps up in 5 days over at cgtalk. The theme was "car crash"...so that's what we have to focus on (which makes it hard to come up with a really plot-driven animation).
As for the robot...he's just there...thought it would be cool to have a robot crash the car instead of the car just smashing into something random.
Anywho...currently working on the next scene so check up soon for updates! -

Anyways...UPDATE!
Animated the new shot in this clip (the one where the robot is gunning down the car) yeseterday and tweaked it today. Also changed a couple other shots around.

Only thing I can suggest is to add more debri coming off when the robut smashes the windscreen, and starts shooting the crap out of it. -

Nice choice of shots - gives us a much better look at that run cycle (which I now think looks scary! Wouldn't want that thing chasing me! lol)
More debris? Yes if you have time, and perhaps a bit more evasive manuvering of the car (though that would be a time consuming pain at this stage)

I just thought there was a fair bit of scrolling on my computer. Perhaps thats because im a grampa and have it on a lower resolution to you kiddies!

23 Jun 2005awesome, we get a much better view just there.
The smoke will bring it up a fair notch for sure. One thing I can see is that as the car spins out of control, it just spins round and round, in real life doesnt it happen in wider circles? It makes it look kind of toyish in that section.
Looking great mate, I want more, all of it together!

I'm thinking that the car could well spin at that rate, though perhaps widen the initial sideways slide so it gains momentum (if you have time)
I'm saying this from recent experience btw... Last weekend I was in a friends car, she took a bend too fast and we slid for (what seemed like) ages, before the traction kicked back in and the momentum made us do a rapid 270 degree spin - which only ended when we went into a ditch by the side of the road.
Luckily we were out in the country the road was quiet and no-one was coming the other way. We were all fine and the car was not damaged at all! My friend was a tad embarassed though -

You've put so much into this and you've come up with a great anim, both technically and creatively. A real treat to watch.
I guess all there is to say now is good luck in the competition (well actually good luck to the competition because the other entrants are going to need it when pitted against an animation like this! hehe) -

Like the method you used to create the buildings, the robot, how you went about animating it all like the movement of the weight of the car and wheels and where you came up with the idea of that robot?

01 Jul 2005my godd......i jsut got done downloading the final animation......the cinematic camera views and action shots are incredible, did you go to film school? anyways, WOW just WOW that robot reminds me of greivous from revenge of the sith, the way he runs and all. i wanna see a story behind it though what was his motivation for chasing the car? etc

there was no story behind the robot, because the whole sequence was for an animation contest entitled "car crash"...therefore, our focus was to be on the crash itself....and there simply wasn't enough time to work on a thorough plot.

07 Jul 2005Hehe...don't tell anyone....but I just ripped the building "plates" right out of the HL2 texture pack....took them into photoshop...darkened them....added glow, some extra windows and an alpha matte etc....and presto!

Congrat's for your victory at CGtalk and winning the Best Animation, Best Editing and Poluar Vote categories! From the look of things you were up against some very stiff competition, and very nearly made it to Overall winner. (Blasphemy's vid is of course very nice - the roll is sweet but the initial impact really didn't do it for me)
