Thanks guys

mahmoudnahmad: The rocket trails were done in 3ds max with afterburn. The particle system is obviously very basic. I have an emitter bound to an invisible cylinder with a position constraint. I did it this way, because I plan to make a missle model at some point. The particle system is just dropping particles as it moves, with a little turbulent noise to push them around. I also have the camera's target bound to the object as well, so it stays in frame as the rocket passes.
I wasn't sure what the sky would look like, so this was rendered on a black background using premultiplied alpha (very very important!
I comped in After Effects. The sky is actually just background layer, and a cloud layer that scrolls in as the camera turns. No 3d camera trickery or anything. Once I had everything where I wanted it, I parented each layer to a null and used a wiggle expression to add some ambient camera motion. So, no, I didn't even use a camera in after effects.
Also, all the motion blur was completely faked by keying a directional blur adjustment layer. This wouldn't have worked at all for something that wasnt moving on a linear path, but actually was more flexible than using real motion blur, since you're not stuck with re-rendering to fix something later.
Just some glow here and there, keying a lens flare for the bright flash, and thats about it.
