Pan Sketch

07 Nov 2006Pan is a mythic creature of antiquity; a goat human hybrid of sorts. Pan's image was later applied to Christianity's Satan symbol. Anyway, as far as i know Pan historically speaking has been exclusively represented as a male, and so i thought it'd be fun to do some concept work for a female rendition. Here's a sketch i took a few minutes to do in Photoshop with my Wacom.

07 Nov 2006Nice idea and a nice sketch... but the only thing saying its not a man is them boobies. The shading and the white/black contrast is a good idea but at the moment it just seems a bit unbalanced.

TheOnlyAaron 188 posts07 Nov 2006I agree with Cam, it is a nice concept, but a few things could help the femmin. . . female. . . femminist-ness of it.
1. the mouth crease from the nose down around the corner of the mouth and the cheekbone are really pronounced for a woman
2. the brow also, seems a bit heavy
I really like the composition however, the unbalanced factor about it is compensated by the way she is looking into that area. I think you have something going here. So if you workout some of those issues, and toss long hair on her you'll have something! -

the original sketch from my notebook was much more feminine. softer cheekbones, smaller nose and brow, but i wanted this character to be a little androgenous and to appear a bit emaciated.
it is unbalanced because i've not finished. she'll actually be looking at her hand once i get a few more minutes to work on this, and the shadows from the top right will be pulled further into the composition.
i'd love to hear more! -

14 Nov 2006Well... I'd say that the actual shading technique is down to the artist Mahmoud, and it works very well here... kinda comic book style. But I do agree with the comments on the sudden black to white shift in the composition. I really think that the background detracts from the overall look of it.
The detail in the hand is fantastic! A solid peice of sketching... but the animator in me says that the overall pose and hand gesture is not particularly dynamic enough... It's not emotive. She (he / it) looks like she's examining something under her fingernails.
Hope that's not too harsh... overall I like

15 Nov 2006not too harsh at all G, i'm glad to get the feed back. i am planning on changing that a bit, i thought that her gaze looked a bit unintrigued. in the painting there is going to be something on her finger, so i thik i'm going to have her hunched over a bit more, peering at it a bit more intently?leaning into it.
ha ha ha, mahmoud, you actually had me laughing?the style of shading is called cross-hatching, and you're the first person i've ever heard talk about any particular style of shading as wrong, lol. but i do appreciate the comment. but just so you know, these are just preliminary sketches for a digital painting i'm planning on doing, so don't worry, there won't be any of this wrong shading when that starts!
